ive got an rem 700 an shes ready fo the hunt.. but i like to stay busy so today i brought out an old western auto 20 gauge.this gun hasnt been out in 20 yrs..
but i decided ti investigate slugs and just what i could do withum..with the standard 23/4 inch rem slugger it showed me that with a little work this could be a most devastating
deer gun.. its a smooth bore but seems to put the slug same place everytime up to a hundred yds... its gonna take some inovative sight work ,,as you always shoot low by a good bit to hit your mark..but even at a hundred the slug would be an devastating hit on a deer.. how come i havn t thought of this before.. at 70 yds the holes in 2by 12 cured oak looked drilled except on exit.. the expensive box of slugs.. hornady i think had by far the least impressive results.. so i guess this old gun likes the plain jane slug..
think im going to have some fun..

I used a 20 ga. for deer hunting last year, too. My 12 has more power, range, and a red dot sight. But, in the thick, hilly, woods where I hunt deer, short shots are the norm and the little 20 with beed sight has plenty of power and accuracy for that.

I like to use the heaviest slug I can find, though. How much do those Rem Sluggers weigh? I like the Brenneke slugs for 20 ga. cause they are almost as heavy as a 12 ga. slug. I think they are 7/8 or 1 ounces.

yep me too on the slugs.. 7/8 oz.is what some i had wt..
all wallmart had was 5/8.. i got some because im at the beginning of a work in progress ..it will take a while for me to find out what the guns limits are.. also what mods i might make ,to increase accuracy and effectiveness of the rnd..
heck i might even put a scope on it but i doubt it..
no big spender here .. but i do have the ability to solve problems without spending bocoos of money. we ll see.
might just be too hot today tho.. 97 and high humidity..
i was good for that at 50 not much at 60 tho..yall have a good one.

progress. 25 yds 1 shot 50 yds 3shot.. 70 yds i hit my limit on what i could do with confidence.. that took some doing too.but now i know what to do at 70 and can make a kill shot
confidently .. with practice i might make it to the hundred but
no promises tho as the same slug that im confident will
knock a big buck down at 70..im not so sure about at an hundred..just my thinking on it..

Sounds like you've got a good setup then. 70 yards would be an extraordinarily long shot in the woods where I hunt.

I looked up the Brenneke slugs and they are 1 full ounce. They would probably still have the mustard to cleanly take a deer at 100 yards. Of course, that all depends on whether they shoot straight for you. I've heard good things about the Remington "BuckHammer" slugs, too. I think they are supposed to shoot well out of a smoothbore.

For a 100 yards and under gun, I'd try to put some kind of iron sights on the gun if possible. Cheaper than a scope too. I know they make some sights that will clamp on to a vent rib but I don't know if your shotgun has that. Really, it's amazing how accurate you can be with just a bead and a little practice, isn't it?

it sure is a surprize to me..i know an oldtimer here that was telling me the other day.. the longest shot he had ever taken in n.c. was 60 yds. said he had taken deer all over the state..
we have some big fields around here so i kinda expect to see some longer shots than that..but thats what the deer rifle is for.
its nice to know id have an backup gun that would be more potent up to 70yds than the rem 700..
ill keep playing with this 20 gauge cause its cheap to shoot.
you never know the full potential until you really know the gun and various ammo.
its the kinda gun you could win some money with if you chose to ,,as its just plain ,cheap an old.. .. of course id never stoop to doing such a thing.lol
its kinda tempting tho ,as you see these newcomers act right snooty with they thousand dollar guns with thousand dollar scopes on them, an such.. its kinda fun to watch ed
who is the best here.. if he sees one come in its like watching a shark circle its prey.ive never seen ed with a pretty gun.yall have a good one.
ps notice i never said your last name ed so dont get po d at me.

For deer I just use my Rem. 870 Wingmaster with the front and midrib sights... with a little practice I got used to aligning them right and could roll a coffee can at 75 yards with slugs and that's just fine. Because it isn't scoped or has true iron sights I can get on target and squeeze off fast shots when we're doing drives because I'm used to upland hunting with the Wingmaster. I went ahead and spent a little more and got the Brenneke black magic magnum slugs... 1 3/8 oz. going 1500 fps at the muzzle packs a ton of recoil (but they're accurate in the smoothbore, flat shooting, and have a ton of penetration power).
