I spent the day at the range with my savage 111 in 30-06 and was not very impressed with my groups. The gun was purchased at Big 5 so it is one of the older models without the accu-trigger. The trigger pull seemed very heavy with a lot of creep and I imagine that this is a large part of my problem. Can anyone tell me what the trigger pull is on one of these savage factory triggers so that I can decide if I should replace it with a timney or rifle basix?

I can't say for sure on the trigger pull. I do own 2 111's, one in 3006 one in 300win mag. I put a rifle basix sav 2 in each of them. . .I couldn't be happier. If money is a bit of a concern, the sav 1 will work just as well, you just can't adjust it as low. Hope that helps you.

if you take the action out of the gunstock, there is a straight spring with one end on a allen screw, that can be backed out to lower the pull weight but it is much nicer to put a timney in, that is what I did to my stevens, which is the same as your savage. The timneys are super easy to put in too

What ammunition are you using?
it could very well be the ammo/load as well as the trigger.
Do you handload?

I tried a variety of factory loads including the low end federal 150 gr, winchester 180 gr silvertip (not ballistic), and 150 grain core- loct. I also tried hornady light magnum 180 grain BTSP (very expensive when trying to tighten up groups).

the ammo therein MAY be your troubles.
Why not try a box of federal premium Match ammo, or perhaps Hornaday.
It might be a tad pricey, but it also may eliminate the ammo as the issue....and not the trigger.
Try a box or two, or even just a box of "better" hunting ammo.
when I first got my M1A, it would not shoot to it's potential until I found a load/ammo that worked well. After that was established, it will shoot 1" from a bench rest w/ a scope at 300 if I do my part.
also, if interested, try reloading at some time....you'll be able to tailor a cartridge to your gun.

Chris makes a very good point. The overall length of a cartridge, bullet weight, powder charge, type of powder makes a big difference. You forgot to mention the size groups you are getting. Your scope may be the culprit also. Jim

well if it is hot there as it is in the midwest (don't know where you are) the heat could be playing with your groups as well. if you want to try a factory load my best luck for 30-06 was federal premium shooting 165 gr sierra game kings or matchkings if you can find them. it took a 1 1/2" group gun and cut it down to an honest 5/8" group gun.

Hi guys, noobie here. I just picked up the Savage 111 in 30-06 from a sporting goods superstore and I liked the trigger well enough but it does have a heavy pull to it. I did just what you mentioned. I took off the trigger guard and saw that little screw. I couldn't match an allen wrench to it, but it was slotted for a flathead as well so I gave it a few turns and it really lightened it up. I would like to research aftermarket triggers though. I'll google up the Timney.

Stevens and Savages are the same the Stevens being a stripped down version.

Make sure you saftey test the trigger as well, with the rifle UNLOADED and the saftey off, bump the butt of the rifle on a hard surface and see if the firing pin drops, I also slam the bolt closed a few times to see if that will jar the sear enough to make the FP drop
