I've located what appears to be a classic standard rifle with a serial number of 86xxxx which, I think, puts it around 1967 or so. It has a red pad and has machine checkering. Also, it has the claw feed. The gun is like new in a RED BOX which should help out in dating it. The end flap says Model 70 classic.

I still can't determine when Winchester came back with the claw extractor and machine instead of stamped checkering. Also, the RED BOX?

Any insight on this from Model 70 fans would be appreciated. I think it can be had for about $625. Is this a good buy?

If you scroll up this forum to a "sticky" labeled "Winchester Model 70 Build Dates", and click on the thread, you can read down the fully informational text to the Post '64 M70 data. There you will find that your summation of a 1967 build date is probably pretty close.

Yellowhouse,
As kdub indicates, SN indicates 1967 build, although that should be a push-feed action/bolt, not a classic w/claw extractor. 1992 is when they came out with the classic with the claw extractor post-'64. So, not sure what you have there.

I have several Winchester Model 70s in the 86XXXX serial number range and they are all push feeds. All the best...

The lack of push feed and the fact that the box refers to it as a classic has me thinking that something doesn't add up, are there any letters in the SN?

USRAC started the serial numbers for Model 70's over (from G1 & Up) when they introduced the Classic series. If the gun is a Classic it cannot be older than 1990 (as mentioned above). A 1967 MFG gun would have to be a pushfeed rifle. Odessa

Thats what I thought. I swear the gun didn't have any letters in the prefix, but I was unable to go back to that gunshow to re-inspect the rifle and box. Guess it's a moot question now, but thanks for the inputl.
