Any recommendations on ammunition for an M1A .308 on deer at 300 – 600 yards?
I currently use Remington 165gr Match HPBT with pretty good results.
Just want to see what any body else uses.

I've never been one for match target ammo for big game, but do like any of the 150 to 165 grain hunting ammo for Deer. Standard Remington core locts work well. Never shot anything much over 300 yards with the 308. Kinda like some of the bigger cartridges for longer ranges. I shoot the 8mm Rem mag and my old hunting partner uses the 7mm Rem mag. Another friend likes both the 7mm STW and the 300 Ultra-mag.

I've been shooting some 150 ballistic tips out of mine, with fairly normal groups. Would like to try the 165 grainers, thats my fave as far as bullet weight for this caliber. Have been shooting alot of FMJ-BT's mostly, but I will try to group some more hunting type of bullets to see what she'll do....I'll keep ya posted...........Lucky13 Oh yeah, its a M1A standard with black fiberglass stock, shoots really well, and has about 325-350 rounds thru it as of now.

Went back to the range today and shot another batch of ballistic tips (150 gr.) out of the M1A, and at 125 yds. was able to keep a 10 shot clip in a 5" circle , twice.... Not bad for me, I have a set of 47 year old welders eyes ! Using Winchester brand brass, CCI #34 primers, and BL-C2.

Hornady TAP ammo in either 110gr or 155gr. I have been pleased with the results that I have seen. It is also very accurate

Most bullet manufactucters don't recomend the use of there match bullets for hunting. There not design for it.There are lot choices out there for accurate long range hunting bullets. If my memory serves me correctly,Darell Holland ,of Holland &Holland accuracy test there custom made rifles with Nosler ballistic tips,There are myriad of other long range hunting bullets out there that will serve you better than match bullets

sierra game kings.... prolly 165 gr. If you stick with a heavier bullet it will bring your b.c. up, you will have to pay close attention to range though. Light for caliber bullets loose energy too quickly at range, I would not shoot lighter than 150.

Hornaday makes a nice round nose 170sp, a great BTSP 165. Seirra makes a great 165 in their Game King series, that shoot very well out to say 250yds.

Match ammo, and the TAP series are NOT hunting ammos, and should not be used as such on game...Match ammo is for paper and accuracy, TAP ammo is for personnell.
Hornaday also make a "light magnum" in 308, which I have fired in my 700 and Browning lever, as well as the M1a.

I do have to ask why you are taking such a long shot tho, as you stated " from 300-600 Yards".

the 308's energy is running out by about 400yards, and it seems to me that is not the way to hunt. Why not get as close as possible, to maximize the potential of the 308?

just my observances...

The Sierra 165 Game King and the Remington 165 grain Core Lokt will work fine. Have used both in my M-1 and M-1A for years.
