I don't know the legal specifics, but you can look up a state gun law overview at the NRA-ILA web site here: http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/.
As to what happens in your state as a practical matter, that often varies with the police force and prosecutor whose jurisdiction you are under. Years ago a friend of mine was managing apartments that included single female tenants. He was concerned he might hear screams some night and have to put a gun in his pocket and go to investigate, but didn't want to be arrested for taking the firearm with him. This was decades before Ohio had a CCW permit system. Instead, he simply called the county prosecutor's office and explained his situation and the prosecutor said that his carrying a firearm in that circumstance was OK with him and that he would not prosecute my friend for doing it. Prosecutorial discretion.
This was a fairly rural county. A big city prosecutor would quite likely take a different view, especially if there were city ordinances layered on top of state law.

Best I can say is see if you can get a CCW. There not very expensive compared to 250 bucks an hour for a lawyer to defend you.

I have in the past slim. Did so at my own peril. I was not conserned with penalty of law at the time.
I was more concerned about surviving so I could go to court if caught!
I do respect the law. I also respect "common sence". Sometimes there is conflict between the two? Must strike a "balance" between them.
Is abit like a traditional single-action revolver. Good saftey dictates that it be loaded with five. I would have no problem loading six if involved in a fire fight!
None of this is problem anymore. The State of Iowa has acknowledged my constitutional right(at a price).
