Today I mounted Scope on a 1970's Model 70 that was gorgeous. Since it has iron sights I figured Weaver bases and mounts were best. Barrel although shorter than the norm was heavier, Bolt was jeweled, stock had a perfect cheek swell and checkering. It was perfect. It has a hidden cross bolt and is bedded, both factory. My Friend is going to Pa his year and wanted a 4x12 40mm scope mounted. The scope is ok, I have one I bought 15years ago and it has not changed externally. It's a .270, and he was wondering if he could hit 300 yards if need be. Personally I would have tossed the scope and given him one, I even offered. But being polite I offered only once. What a rifle. Nothing made these days even compares. He bought it second hand in California 12 years ago for $122.00. It is the first Jaw dropper I have seen in years! Jim

I bought a Mod 70 XTR in early '82. The cal. was 7mag. It had the jewled bolt and the black(ebony?)fore end cap.
I mounted a Bushnell 4X12X40 with the BDC on top. It was on sale in Lajes,Azores for $70 or so IIRC. It was the model that came with the little turret drums that you could change for the load you was shooting.
What a shooter. Loaded the Speer 115's for chucks, crows, and yotes, and the 162's for deer. Took alot of game with that weapon. Wish I still had it.
Traded it for a Browning Stainless Stalker. The Browning is a fine weapon, but it still will not shoot like my ol' Mod 70.----pruhdlr

jp, my younger brother has a 1980 or so mod 70 XTR in 270 Win that is almost new, still with the open sights on it, and a Burris 3-9x; he's hardly ever used it, but must have plugged something with it because it looks as if there is some leftover blood on the stock.
This one has a great stick of wood on it. Was there an XTC model, or was that a typo? If so, what is it?

Shawn, That is it! Checkering on the underside of the stock also. The wrist Cap and butt have no white. Jim

Yup, checkering on the forearm underside. I have the same in 25-06, but it's seen many more miles than that nice 270 in the pics (I refinished and recheckered the 25-06 1-2 years ago). They are great rifles.
