The long established Winnipeg, Manitoba sporting goods store, S.I.R., will be Cabela's first Canadian outlet.

I do not know anything about S.I.R. Is this a good thing or bad thing in your opinion.

Time will tell. I have no inside knowledge, but any 83 year old family business can run out of members who can run it. If it's a case of having to sell, I'd prefer someone like Cabelas who have a proven track record.

The only other mail-order outfit in Western Canada, Wholesale Sports, recently bought out their competitor Russell Sports. A little competition is good, and Cabelas should provide it.

I sure hope this is a boost for our Canadian friends, and they will be able to get merchandise they needed to get from the States before a lot eaiser.

I am a true customer of cabela's, both internet and the PA. store.

I have found their product to be of very high quality, their specials of good value, and their customer service Excellent. any issues i have had, [once, I believe] were handled in my favor, without question.

I may be so bold as to say it will be a good thing for you.

Agreed on all counts. I've been to the Hamburg store probably 15 times and it's been enjoyable every time!

One nice thing is I occassionaly have gotten $10 gift cards in the mail as a promotion, and there's no minimum purchase to use them. Once I got two items for $4.99 and only had to pay tax. Another time I used one online for a $20 purchase so I only had to pay about $15 with shipping.

I visit the Hamburg store quite often. I love Cabelas! My wife and I outfitted our cabin from there. :D

I have made several purchases from S.I.R through mail order and visited the store on one occasion. I can remember looking through the catalogue as a kid believing they had everything a man could possibly need. I have never been to a Cabela's before but just by comparing the catalogues I notice that S.I.R has many pages of rifles, and shotguns that are not in the Cabela's catalogue. :(

Unfortunately,no Cabela's down here in Flah-Dah.

I do have the Cabela's VISA(had it for 12yrs),and do approx. 10K with the card every year. The club points are great.

Have a buddy that uses his card for everything, home mortgage, two vech. payments, buisness travel, gas, etc. He comes up with a bunch of points every year.

Cabela's has always done me right. We need a store down here. -----pruhdlr

If I'm not mistaken, mail order gun sales are illegal in the USA. Let's hope Cabelas prints a Canadian catalogue with a very large gun selection.

In MN we have a total of 3 Cabellas, Owatonna, Fargo and Rogers. I live near the Rogers store and visit there often. Nearby is also Gander Mountain, Sportsman Warehouse and Scheels. On reloading material, Scheels is by far the most affordable, purchase most everything for reloading there. Gander Mountain is the highest price with the least amount of custormer service, hardly spend anything there. Guns and most other items are cheaper at Sportsman Warehouse, however, because of the points I earn using the Cabellas credit card as well as gift certs I have gotten from friends over time, I end up at Cabellas purchasing larger priced items there quite a bit. Without the gift cards or the points, Sportsmans Warehouse would probably see more of me.

Of course, on gun purchases, the gun shows continue to be the best price.

I am sure you will find Cabellas very user friendly. Get their credit card, use it conservatively and rack up the points to be used for purchases.

Brad-why not use the card at Sportsman Warehouse and get some points AND the best price. Ill bet the difference (1%) will more than be made up by the savings at SW.

I do purchase quite a bit from Sportsmans warehouse, and I do use my Cabellas card there and at Scheels, when the price is right. However, the gift cards I receive can not be used at SW or Scheels, thats when it makes more sense to purchase at Cabellas. The last gun I purchased, a S&W 637 was $399 at Cabellas, $369 at SW. Cabellas had a $30.00 discount going, I had over $100 in points and $75 in gift cards. On the bigger items when I can use the points and gift card, it really is best to buy at Cabellas.

Retailers probably hate guys like me who scrape for every last penny before they purchase. If there is a chance to dicker on the price, I always ask. :D

Dont feel bad about it-just play their what I call "silly games."

If you can save a buck do so.Buy low-sell high is their motto and I (we) have adopted it.

i have looked into this further and emailed them and will look further as i go to the store today they said :Cabela's has made an offer to purchase which is expected to close in the next 30-60 days.
This is advantageous for both companies as it allows Cabela's to enter Canada and S.I.R. to raise its service and selection to its customers.
Regards

apparently they have (cabela's) been thinking about this for a while check this site for more speculation http://www.manitobaanglers.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=37008.html - 57k
