I am presently looking into buying an S & W 59 for home defense and casual plinking. Anyone have any experience, likes/dislikes with these? I have read that these had an Aluminun frame, but this one is Nickle plated, could it still have an Al. frame?
Thanks in advance for any info!

Nickle plating can be done on an aluminum frame as well as steel, not much advantage to it except to match the frame color to the slide. I would get a magnet to check the frame with.

You might want to take a look at some of the newer Smiths such as the 4013. Smith has come a long way since the 59, though they were a nice gun and carried by a lot of police officers at one time.

The 59 is a good gun, and if the price were right I'd certainly get one for home defense. The only kick I ever had against them was the grip -- it is from an era before S&W discovered ergonomics, and it feels in my hand about like a 2X4.
If the price is comparable to that of a new M&P, I think I'd go with the new gun -- unless you're a bit of a sentimentalist like me, in which case, go for it.

I had one many years back.
not a bad gun, but a terrible trigger.
If you wish to buy an older Smith, shop for a model 39, in my opinion, a better gun.

Thanks for the info guys, I ended up buying it. Fit the bill for what I need and was able to trade something I won't miss. Trigger doesn't seam too bad in the time or two I dry fired it. Maybe the LEO that owned it had it worked on.
My ultimate Goal would be to get a Glock 32(?)in 357Sig with a 9MM barrrel also.
