I've been fascinated with hunting "exotics" for several years. That is, animals which are not native to North America. Red stag are European cousins to North American elk.

I enjoyed a hunt for Russian boar in both northern California and Pennsylvania.

Now I'm ready for red stag. Maine has a number of hunting preserves of varying acreage and pricing. But I have zero comprehension of good, bad, or ugly operations. Any helpful insight is much appreciated.

T.R. - A friend of mine shot an elk at one of the ranches in Maine. It was in Scarborough, Maine & I think it's called Bayley's, but don't hold me to that. He enjoyed the experience, but admitted he was in it for the meat as much as anything. He was not trophy hunting. There is a big outfit in eastern Maine not too far from the coast. It's roughly eastnortheast of Bangor, and NNE of Ellsworth. I don't want to name it, but have heard less than complementary things about it w/ regard to legal issues. Good luck.

That stag was shot at Mountain Shadows in Houlton Maine.The hunter was from CA. That place has many entries in SCI. Visit the website.

Here is a stag harvested today 12/7/07 by hunter Bruce Benedict from Bronx NY...This 18 point stag tipped the scales at 496 lbs!

If you are looking for a great place to hunt red stags, Maine is the place!
