Hello all. I'm new to this forum and am glad that I found it. Any forum that includes talk about guns and FAITH is just alright by me! Are there many others from western Pa? How about Savage- switch barrel enthusiasts?

Welcome uplate!

There are some fellers here that do the switcher-roo, but me, I'm a one caliber per gun kind of guy. Call me old fashioned I guess. :D

Welcome to the forum. If you've been lurking, you know the rules.

A friend of mine has a switchbarrel Mauser. .30-06/.35 Whelen. One wrench, hand tight only. It takes him less than a minute to swap barrels. Unlike a well-torqued Savage barrel, this beast doesn't achieve the kind of rigidity needed for tack driving accuracy, but for general purpose hunting it has served my friend well enough. In any event, that's how I think of the term "switchbarrel", something easily changed in the field. I guess the Savage falls somewhere between that and a fixed barrel in my mind.

My own Savage has only one barrel. I admit I am hesitant to risk altering the headspace even slightly after forming brass and working up loads. It would be interesting to hear from you or others who are changing these barrels regularly about what accuracy shifts, if any, that you see? I would think a registration scratch and a torque wrench adapted to the Savage barrel wrench would be necessary to exactly replicate barrel draw and with it, chamber headspace location.

Welcome to the forum update. I'm not a Savage kind of guy, got mostly Remingtons, but my old hunting partner has been shooting a Savage 7mm Rem mag for more than 25 years now and I just don't know how many elk and deer he's whacked with that Old Savage. He liked it so well he treated himself to a brand new one this year with the new accu-trigger in the same caliber.

If you do a search I've posted several times on how easy it is to switch barrels around on these fine rifles. Lots of folks shoot them here even if they are ugly as sin compared to my purty Remingtons. They sure don't take a back seat in accuracy to anything on the market.
