Spread on 600lbs of lime and 300lbs of fert(13-13-13)the other day. My plot is approx an acre. Cut it in with my ATV pulling a small disc. Will plant in a couple of weeks if the rain will cooperate.
Can't decide what mix to plant. Probably soy beans, oats, millet,a small amount of clover(that stuff is expensive),and a bag of chufas.
I can see that I will have a problem keeping the hogs from stomping/rooting it before it matures. Will try to eliminate several of the problem makers early in the season.
Am feeding dry corn from a timed feeder right now. Will hang another smaller feeder from my uprights before deer season. Will put a deer mix in that.
You don't have to be choosey as to what you feed hogs. They'll eat anything. They absolutely love day old bread. Cheap dogfood also.
I buy some of the catfish bait that comes in a small plastic can, from Wally World. This,I spread on the side of a small tree that I want uprooted. Wah-lah, done in several days. It's gonna be an interesting year. -----pruhdlr

Well would you believe it cooled of to the mid 80s this week. I plan on hanging my corn feeder this weekend and putting new camo up on the old deer stand. I am so glad to see cool weather coming. I don't mind working and sweating but I hate like h*** to just stand still and sweat. Hope you are having good weather in Florida.
I love the advice about the catfish bait. I got several trees I need to get rid of.

Something else that will drive the hogs absolutely crazy is snow cone syrup. I get it at Wally-World in squirt bottles that are about 12oz. for less than 2 bucks. It is as good (if not better) than Pig Out and some of the other attractants. It comes in flavors like blueberry, strawberry, grape, and several others. The sweetness plus the flavor brings the hogs.
Anything that I put on the ground like bread, small piles of corn, pears, potato skins, etc.,I give a little squirt with the syrup.
I have several small wallows on my plot that I spray with a small ammount of KRESO D. This product can be found in feed stores that also sell horse, cow, and sheep, supplies. It's used to keep flies and gnats off the animals. It comes in a small metal can(8-10ozs)that is yellow in color. It smells of strong creosote. I dilute it with water. Several spoon fulls makes a half gallon on spray. Hogs absolutely love it. Spray the bottom of a tree and you have an instant rubbing post. Spray a small wallow and the hogs will keep using it over and over. They will go outta their way to come to the treated wallow area. The $12 can will make you 10+ gallons of spray. I have used two cans in 4 1/2 years.
I'm sure that if this works in the river swamps of Fla. it'll work just fine in La. also. Hogs are basically............hogs. ---pruhdlr

10-4 Mike. No prob
I didn't know how many people there were hangin' round the SE forum anymore. Wish we had more. I take a look at the SW site every now and then. The area's and their hunting stratergies/methods aren't that much different. Especially the deer and hog behavior. I got some good tips from the boys out in TX. several years ago. I'm always willing to learn.
My club killed the states(Fla.)12th highest scoreing deer last year. Our club is very conservative in it's hunting policies. This is coming back to us in the quality in "Fla. sized" deer. Nothing as compared to TX.,but some nice "swamp" deer.
I know that they eat good after dineing on tons of Honeysuckle all year.
Good luck to all the hunters this year. If we continue to escape the storms we should do good. -----pruhdlr

I lived in Northern Alabama for seven years and saw only six deer! Twenty miles S.W. of Tallahassee fla. I'd see that many every single day! So some places are really overrated while others are overlooked. The animals in Alabama had more food than any other place I've been, but you can coax them out of their cover using sweetpotatoes. It"s ten times better than corn!

Yeah, some of the club members have been telling me about a place over near Foley,Al.,where you can buy the culled sweet 'taters. I guess that a p/u truck load is 10 or 15 bucks or so. Might check further into that.
Problem with corn nowadays is,it is so darned expensive in bulk. At the CO-OP in Walnut Hill I have been paying $26-$28 for a 55gal drum full. That's 380#'s. That comes to about $.085 per pound. The guys at the club tell me that this is the most expensive that it has ever been.
Deer corn at Wally World is $5.23 after tax. That comes to about $.13 per #.
I have been putting out pears also. I have a couple of neighbors that have large trees that are loaded with the canning pears. They fall from the trees and they have to mow around them. They are glad for me to come over and pick them up. I have put out a couple hundred pounds of them so far but they will be gone before hunting season,I'm sure.
I cut them in small pieces and put them in a 5gal plastic bucket. I pour several ozs. of snow cone syrup over the top,put the lid on tight, and leave the container in the sun for a couple of weeks. The sweet syrup helps the fermentation process. I have 3 buckets "gettin' ready" right now.
I can get peanuts fairly cheap also. The CO-OP up in Jay,Fla. has 'em,but that is 30 miles away. -----pruhdlr
