I have a Weatherby Mark V ACCUMARK WITH AN ACCUBRAKE IN 7 WBY mag and it will not group what I call decent 1 1/2 or less. I have used facorty loads as well as hand load's. Checked all the usual thing's mount's, rings, action screws. The barrel is free floating, have a burris 3.5 X 10 fullfield on it. Anybody having similar problems with thier Weatherby's.

What bullet weight did you try? I'd give it another go with some 150 grainers or higher. You can expect Weatherby's free-bored barrels to group their best with heavier (read longer) bullets as they reduce the jump from the throat thru the free-bore to the lands. That rifle should give you inch groups, without effort.

Tune your trigger to reduce creep and pull weight.

Have you considered handloading? You could tailor the ammo to the gun at a considerable cost savings, to boot.

I have had the Accumark w/Accubrake in .30-378 now for 5+ years. My weapon will shoot MOA out to 700yds.

I have my trigger ajusted down to the lowest setting and it is a measured 3 pounds,3ozs. This, with NO creep whatsoever.

This weapon absolutely loves the heavier bullets. So does my 7mm Rem Mag(Browning).

I suspect your WBY would love some of the 162's or 168's with a heavy dose of H4831 or similar powder.

I have NEVER herd of a WBY(especially a Accumark) that would not shoot 1.5MOA fed a diet of the proper handloads. -----pruhdlr

I've handloaded 145's and 162's with H4831, guess I'll try some 175's. thanks

Well, first off, 4831 ain't the Wby powder. I suggest the Reloader 22, which is the old Norma MRP, and that is the powder Wby uses. I have consistently gotten 7/8" groups, and stopped there since they make big holes in big animals, so don't need better. I'd suggest paying close attention to the powder, bullet choice (personally, I use Hornady's, tho' Noslers and Sierras would do well) and SEATING DEPTH. Seat that bullet near out to the lands. Oh, only use Fed 215 primers in Wby cartridges as well. They were made to burn all that powder. A little here, a little there, you'll be surprised at the differences.

I'm picking up a Vanguard in .257mag. Your tips will help me on my way. I've already been using the R22 with great results in velocity and accuracy in the .270win (Savage).

Thanx!

As is the .240,the .257 is a real screeeeeeemer.

I had sports in Maine take deer at the longer ranges with the .257 using the 120's.

Would love to own a Wby chambered in that cal.

Yeah, I cant wait. It's on layaway for a few months but will snag it before the hunting season.

We have a 450yd field we hunt over in the blinds. Maybe some day a big one will pop out into the field where I can stretch the 'bee out.

disclaimer: yes, I practice at these distances with my .270win :)

My #1 hunting partner uses a .240 Wby for his deer hunting, pretty near exclusively for near 20 years I bet, and I can only recall one lost deer. Bad shot? Bullet blow up? We don't know. Lots of blood, make that several deer's worth of blood! but never found deer. In any event, the .240 and .257 are killers.

For me it's:
Roll of meat wrap. Board to hang it on. Laser rangefinder. Bench and bags.

I roll off a 4-5ft length of paper. Put a 2 inch horizonal stripe about a foot from the top. NOTE: It is extremely important to make sure your line on the paper is checked level with a bubble level. Also that your scopes crosshairs are kept level when shooting. Start at 200yds and increase the range a little at a time. For me,it's every 50 yds. Shoot 3 shot groups and see where the center of your pattern lies below the horizonal line.

I even do this with my .45-70 and .50Beowulf but I use 200yds as my max distance.

Always keep the line in your reticle lined up (mated with) the line on your paper and you will see the "REAL" trajectory of your bullets.

This is especially useful with my 7 Rem mag and my .30-378 shooting at the longer ranges.

Having a friend as a spotter with handheld radio's or a ATV is also helpful. -----pruhdlr
