View Full Version : .375 Win.: What muzzle velocity...
...are y'all running your rifles at with the 220 Hornady's??? I'm usually around 2.1k-2.2k fps, but am thinking about ratcheting it down to somewhere like a hot .38-55, sub-2k fps.

Mine seems to like 2050 -2100fps with the 220's. I've used AA1680 to get a lot more speed, but didn't get the accuracy I wanted. A full load of RL-7 gives me around 2100 and that's good enough for me.

Mine does best with 36.0 RL7 for 2150 fps.

39 to 40 grains of AA1680. In my rifle accuracy decreases at below 2000 fps.

I get right at those same speeds with the same (36.0 RL7) load from my 14" Contender. With cartridges that have expansion ratios as high as the .375 Win, barrel length doesn't matter much. Velocity increases very little if at all with longer barrels.
I like the 200 Sierra as well as the 220 Hornady, but for elk I use the pointy 210 Barnes X (single-shot guns only). Accuracy is astounding - sub-inch for five at 100 yards.
