The 22-243 barrel will only last 1000 rounds with max powder loads. Is that true?Q

That certainly can be true depending on the twist rate. Faster twist rates will wear much sooner than slower twist rates. It also depends on the rate of fire. Faster fire rates that heat the barrel more tend to erode throats faster and barrels wear out faster.

Solve the problem get a 204 and run it around 4100 to 4200 fps and enjoy the flat trajectories and high velocities with decent barrel wear.

I would have to say that is untrue. All barrels have a limited life but 1000 rounds would be unreasonably short. My CHeetah has had about 1700 rounds through it since it was rechambered. It will still shoot quarter inch groups and my load is not mild at all. I would say it would be about 3000 rounds before you would notice a drop in accuracy and even then it would be awhile before the accuracy loss became significant.

I'm keeping careful count of the bullets fired through my 6mm/284 and inspect the bore frequently with my Hawkeye borescope. So far, 850+ rounds and the throat/bore still look good.

Then again, I'm shooting heavy-for-caliber bullets and don't push them at max velocities.

I amnot familar with twist rate being a major player in barrel life expectancey....What do you base this claim on? The 204 at over 4000 FPS would IMHO be a barrel burner with a realively large powder capacity for its bore size, high pressure and high velocity.....

Bob you are probably right. I have a friend that shoots a .204 cz. He loves the gun, I shot the.204 with his lead sled at 300 yards. The gun will shoot a 2 inch group without any problem. I have an old ,243 that I want to do something with. The 22-243 seems to be the best choice.Q

Thinking about it, believe i could burn out a barrel on a .204 with just 1000rounds...I'd have to sit down and shoot as rapidly as possible, not stopping to cool off or clean the barrel at all, and just ignore that it started setting fire to the stock. Think I could do it in a single afternoon If I put my mind to it (might even get it hot enough for the rounds to self-ignite near the middle of that 1000 shot run).

But for normal humans, who will stop and let a rifle cool off, will clean the bore as it fouls, doubt that 3X that amount of shooting would toast the bore.

For the micro-second of a gun shot, there isn't any real distinction between temperature and pressure. "Heat" would be the tranfer of that temperture to the metal, and that's where the difference in TIME lies.

50K pressure produces the same temperature in a .223 as it does in a .220Swift. Difference being the Swift burns more powder, so that temperature last longer.

The old "finger through the candle flame" anaology....but the more powder you burn, the more candles you line up for your finger to pass through.

Thank-you ribbonstone, So I know this was just a lie. I'm looking forward to my first wildcat. A 22-243 Thank-you for everyones input. Q

I have a 22/243 larjon and have pushed over 2500 rounds through it and it still shoots well. Mine has a 1-8 twist but prefers the 69 gr matchkings.Keep them clean and not too hot and they last quite a while.
