Welcome to the forum fatty. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.

I don't have a #1V, but would a #1B due? It was built in 1979 and with over 45 years hunting is my first #1. It's in 243 and shoots nice one inch groups and I've done nothing to it but adjust the trigger.

It's got nice wood and my oldest grand daughter says it's here deer and varmint gun now. She enjoys shooting it as much as I do. Last Christmas I put on a brand new Weaver 3 by 9 classic and made it hers. She's 14 this year and working on getting here first deer this fall.

Here's what the wood looks like.

The smile pretty much says it all.

This is my #1V in 25-06. It sports a Redfield 3-10 X 50mm scope with the wide view finder.

This is how it shoots with my handloads. The target was 150 yards distant. I've since tightened the groups.

This is it from the other side. The grain in the wood is better than shown in the picture, especially in sunlight.

I especially like this picture....two shots....two different guns....same cap....this won me a couple of beers. It was only at 100 yards but I bet the first shot (CZ550 - 243 Winchester) I could shoot the antlers off the moose and the second shot (#1V - 25-06) I could make a clean hole in the cap without cutting the edge or hitting the first hole.

great pix indeed!

Im placing my first Single shot on layaway on Monday. It's a new #1V in .223.

I can not wait.

I just hope she shoots well. Haven't heard how the new ones are doing.

Awesome bottle cap. Optics used?

At the time, I had a Burris Fullfield II 2-7 X 33mm on the CZ 550 FS 243 Win (since removed in favor of iron sights) and a Zeiss conquest 4.5 - 14 X 44mm on the 25-06 (since replaced by the Redfield). I like the Redfield on that gun better because the Zeiss has a "parallax" adjustment for different distances (it's a focus control) whereas the Redfield is in focus all the time. I don't give up much between the 10X and 14X magnification when shooting the gun and I can use the 25-06 for deer too. A scope that requires focusing for a shot at a deer is not a good choice. I moved the Zeiss to my Rem 700 LVSF in 221 Fireball. It's a great compliment to that gun.

i was stuck between the .25-06 and the .223

How does the your .25-06 feel when shooting it all day?

I like to see my impacts. I guessed with the .25 the recoil eliminates that.

You will not see impacts through the scope with a 25-06, you may not see it with a 223 either. Bob claims to see hits with his 204 Ruger chambered CZ and I see them clearly with my 221 Fireball.

The gun is not difficult to shoot for extended periods of time because it's pretty heavy, over 11 lbs with scope and sling. Couple that with nesting it on a rest and you don't experience a lot of flet recoil. I use a simple Caldwell shooting bag set up. The 25-06 gets a little warm so you have to let it cool. Not a big deal for me because I have a second gun to shoot but a definate issue with only one gun.

FWIW - I ordered my #1V from Wally World about 5 years ago. They had the best price around and it is the exact same gun you would find in a gun shop. By ordering it you don't get to see the aesthetics before hand. I got lucky and mine has a nice looking piece of wood.

I'm sure you will like it. When you get it you might experience inconsistencies in shooting, they you will be looking through the archives for information to accurize your gun. Not hard and you may not see a problem but if you do just ask.

i'm thinking about the kepplinger set trigger. i played with one on a range for a bit and really liked it. but i will see how the factory one does.

they are the most elegant rifle imho and need to find a scope that does what I need it to while taking away from the beauty of the rifle.

Im shooting blacktail deer in Oregon down to sage rats with it. Yotes etc. in between.

The deer here are like dogs, been using my ar's in .223 for 15 years and never had more than a one shot kill. The .25-06 would let me take it to eastern oregon for the big mule deer that I sometimes like to take a poke at.

Would you say your 1v has nice balance? I didnt think the rifle was to nose heavy as the remmy and savage heavy barrels are. Maybe my brain is just saying do it! lol

R there any ruger #1 forum sites out there?

My next project will be to work on my #1V trigger. I'm going to "clean it up" myself and check it out before I replace it. The Kepplinger is pretty pricey but if it compares to the single set trigger on my CZ it will be worth the money. Where will you buy it?

I just made a trade deal today with another forum member for some 117 and 120 grain bullets for the 25-06. I shoot Nosler 100 grain ballistic tips for everything at the moment but wanted a heavier bullet for deer. We have some pretty stout whitetails here in NY.

As far as balance goes - yes the gun is nicely balanced with or without the scope. The super short action really helps with the balance. You get plenty of forward heft under the barrel, even short arm people seem to appreciate the balance of the gun.

I'm not aware of any sites specifically for #1 users but a few forum members have quite a collection of Number Ones.

WOW, that's knock out wood faucettb.

fatty, Or anyone else wanting to know more about the Ruger # 1.

Yes there is a Ruger # 1 site. If you want to know the inside and outside of the Ruger # 1 try this group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ruger-1 there's about 750 members in the group and it is specifically for Ruger # 1's, you will find stuff on shooting, collecting, triggers, bedding, reloading, scopes, accurizing, surveys, pix, wanted and for sale sections, etc., etc., etc. all specific to the # 1.

They also hold an annual Bench Rest shoot for # 1's only, in fact it's going on right now and will be going on all next month also.

It's well known as the # 1 site for the # 1.

forgot

I only use nosler BT's for my .223's

In fact, With my AR's I couldnt beat the accuracy of Winchesters Supreme 55 grainers, factory loads. they shot .5 inch groups out of my Olympic HBAR of all things. LOL They also dropped the dear around here like potato sacks.

I bought a No. 1 within the last year and it shoots great. It sure doesn't have wood like Bob's does but it's nice enough.

fatty,
Thanks for the link, I have three Kepplinger triggers on three of my # 1's. When you go to the Ruger # 1 group check out the Files section of the group. I think they have a good report on the Kepplinger trigger and also on the other triggers, along with pix. You may want to check out Brownells for prices.

I just got my #1V .223 used, 5 months ago, and already it is my favorite rifle.

It has shot a .46" 5 shot group with 33 gr Vmax moly 15 gr Blue Dot, 3500 fps.

GREAT, sounds like a winner, you should enter it in the Ruger # 1 World Bench Rest Shoot, the World record at this time for 22 Caliber is .633 set in 2005 and your .460 5 shot group would do it for you, if it was fired at 100 Yds. You should give it a try, the enter fee is only $ 5.00 and they give out some nice awards.

I won the rifle used on Auction arms for $499 on 4/29/2007
It has been to the range twice:

A) 2007-5-23 light wind
1) Ruger #1 single shot falling block rifle, in .223 Remington varmint model . It cost me $542 with shipping out the FFL door.
6.5x20x40 Leupold vari-iii boosted to 13x40x40
This rifle showed up this week with terrible Copper fouling, but good condition for 3 rd hand.
I cleaned the bore with Butch's Bore shine, Foul Out, more Butch's, ect, until I could see no copper and then I burnished it with Lyman Moly bore cream.
b) 15 gr Blue Dot 33 gr Vmax moly, 2,170" OAL does not reach lands,
a) a fouling shot an inch low and I corrected
b) 0.4" 3 shot group @ 50yards
c) 0.92" 5shot group @ 100yards
d) 0.46" 5shot group @ 100yards
e) 0.9" 5shot group @ 100yards
f) 1.02" 5shot group @ 100yards
g) 0.61" 5shot group @ 100yards
h) 0.75" 5shot group @ 100yards
i) 0.3" 5 shot group @ 50yards
That is an average of .78" 5 shot @100 yards in the a little wind
I knew the gusty wind was driving the group size, so I did the last group at 50 yards.

B) 9-1-2007 8mph wind.

Well, I think it's shooting very good being that your shooting hunting bullets. The way the Ruger # 1 Bench Shoot works is by Caliber Classes, this way all the shooters can shoot against other shooters that have similar calibers, they shoot two 5 shot groups on two different targets, then avg to two groups to come up with the average group size. The nice thing about the Matches is that they are postal matches, shoot when you can where you can, send the witnessed targets in for scoring and see where you stand, target dead line is Oct. 30 th. so there's still time to enter.

Your .46 and your .61 would average .535, good enough to win the World title for the 22 Caliber. I don't know of any 50 Yd. shoots with Center Fire Rifles, or any events that only shoot 3 shots so don't have anything to compare them to.

First chance you get you should try some good Match Grade bullets, it may do much better. That was a very good deal on it, now a days any time you can buy a set up like that for under $ 550. it's time to celebrate, you did very well.
