Just wondering what kind of velocity you guys are getting with your 45-70's with plain base bullets without too much barrel leading...
Going to try my hand at casting once again and would like to try a good 400+/- plain base hunting load at 15-1600fps in my GG.
Thanks in advance

I push my cast .458 bullets out at velocities up to 2200 but I cast with linotype. I have pushed the Oregon Trail Lasercast 405 out at 2000 without a problem. I will add I am using a match grade custom barrel, it does make a difference.

I generally lube then tumble lube my 45-70 slugs with Lees Liquid Alox and keep the velocities reasonable. I have not seen any sign of leading so far.

Almost all of my 45/70 bullets are plain base cast, with Lyman lube. Most alloys are around BHN9.
My rifles are all Trapdoors, and working velocities are mostly between 1400 and 1600 FPS.

My most accurate 45/70 400 gr. cast bullet load is 44-46 gr. IMR 3031. its going in the 1600 fps range. My most accurate 335 gr. (Lee 340) is 51 gr. of Reloader 7, for 1950 fps. Tumble kube and after they are dry then relube with Lyman rifle lube. Especially the lighter bullets.
