I'm trying to come up with a good load for my 300 RUM. I have a couple of 1 pounders of the IMR 4831. When I purchased bullets from Berger I asked them through email for some loading data which they were happy to provide.
The data calls for 88.5 to 95.0 grns for min/max loads of IMR 4831 SC. The stuff I have is regular old 4831 (not short cut). This is for a 155 gr Berger VLD bullet, 3.60 COL and 26" barrel.
The Hogdon website lists for a 150 grain bullet 85.0 to 90.5 grs for min/max loads of plain IMR 4831.
The Hornady manual lists for 150 to 155 grn bullets 74 to 85 grns as min/max loads of plain IMR 4831. I know they are different bullets but I wouldn't expect it to be that different
Does anybody have any experience with how IMR 4831 and 4831 SC compares. Is there completely different data out there for the two different powders, does it preforme better/burn faster or did they just do this only for the ease of measurment?
Would I be safe in starting with the Berger data of 88.5 and working up using the plain old 4831?
Any help/different recipies would be appreciated. I would just like to try and use the 4831 b/c as mentioned I've got a good bit of it onhand.

I have not loaded for the 300 RUM in IMR 4831 & H4831 SC but I have in 270 Win, 7mm REM, 300 Win and 338 Win and in those guns IMR 4831 was always faster burning by 2 to 4 grains. It could be more than that on the big 300 RUM case so be cautious. For some reason IMR 4831 always seems more to picky about the powder charge it likes for best accuracy than H4831SC H4831.

IMR 4831 SC is supposed to burn grain for grain like plain old IMR 4831 according to all I've read . Go to this site and fill in the blanks with whatever powder and bullet weight you want.

It should help you out.
I never used 4831SC in my 300RUM but I did use "old" 4831 with some success. I've switched to IMR 7828 now and I'm getting better groups with 180's. I haven't tried 150 grainers yet and probably won't as mine seems to like 180 grain Nosler Accubonds.

Bulldawg: I have a favorite load using IMR 4381. I use a 180gr nosler partition with 81 gr IMR 4381 that is chrony at 3075 fps.
I like this load because it gives me 3/4 inch groups or less consistently. This is my hunting load as shot placement is important to me rather than speed. Most shots I take are from 100 to 250 yards. Rarely do I attempt longer shots.
Note this is a general guideline for starting loads.
Using IMR 4381
165gr bullet starting load is 80 gr min to 86 gr max.
180 gr bullet starting load is 75.8 gr min to 84.0 gr max.
200 gr bullet starting load is 73.4 gr min to 83.5 gr max.
Just a reminder please work up loads as every gun is different and I recommend you pick up a chrony if you don't already own one as it was the best investment I have ever made and has been invaluable in working up loads.

Thread has me a little confused. There are three 4831 powders. IMR-4831, H-4831, and H-4831SC.
I have read that H-4831 and H4831SC data is interchangable. Not true for IMR-4831.
Easy to find data for all three on the web.

So, I'm not the only one that thought this way.
I knew Hodgon and IMR merged a while back (when I started seeing round plastic jars of IMR 4064), but I didn't think they had brought the shortcut variation to the IMR line.

Walt Berger sent me some reloading data...it calls for IMR 4831 SC. I guess since I can't find the IMR 4831 SC anywhere maybe Berger sent me something with a typo in it. Something to ckeck out before I move forward.
Thanks Cheezywan/amndouglas for point that out...
RJ - Thanks for the Link. :) I have heard good stuff about the IMR 7828 but again the data Berger sent calls for the IMR 7828 SSC. I think that I am gonna use some plain old IMR 7828 not the SSC and back off a little and work up.
I'v gotta Hornady data for the 150 to 155 grainers that calls for 7828 and it is pretty close to what Berger called for with the 'SSC'.
RJ sounds like your pretty happy with the IMR 7828?
Again, Thanks all for posting and helping me out!!!

Out of the 5 powders I tried, IMR7828 has given the best groups. Not the highest velocities, just the best groups. I eve n went so far as to buy an 8 pounder of it. Sure hope it continues to perform
