i'm a rookie reloader. need help on 300wsm load data for 165/168 barnes TSX.
can i duplicate Federal factory velocities (these were chrony'd)?:
180 MRX @ 3017 FPS
165 TSX @ 3132 FPS
point of impact plane is the same for both bullets, dead on @ 300 yds. does the plastic tip on the 180's, even though slower velocity, cause a flatter trajectory for the point of impacts to be the same?
getting 2-2 1/2" group @ 300 with 165's, which i think is good, but i would like to do it myself.
thanks in advance for any help/advice

Welcome wildcat. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.
In the 45 years I've been reloading I've found it hard at times to duplicate some factory loadings. You may or may not be able to duplicate them. I've found though that most animals can't tell the difference if your a hundred feet slower than a factory load.
As for bullets most high velocity plastic tip bullets kill very well, but will cause more meat damage than those without the plastic tips.
You may be able to get better groups, but usually it'll take some work trying different bullet/power combinations. Often a rifle will shoot one bullet/powder/load weight combination way better than others. Getting that sweat spot load is what many of reloaders are after, kinda the holy grail of reloading.

thanks. today i shot a 1.17" 3 shot group @ 300 yds with some loads that Superior Ammo worked up for me. It was a 165 grain Barnes TSX @ 2985 FPS. I also shot a .841 3 shot (@ 300 yds) group using Federal 180 gr Barnes MRX @ 3017 FPS. Using my wifes stock Browning SS with 3-12 Schmidt & Bender scope, the BR guys at the range couldn't believe it, but they witnessed it. i think i'll just stop with what i have. look out elk!!
