View Full Version : Need a new match rifle
The 336XLR is going down the road the first chance I get.
I kind of want a 1894 in .357 but they seem to be scarce right now. I keep hoping I'm going to come across on of the 24" barrel models.
I need a new 30-30 also, I just can't find one I want, may end up with a new 336C.
.308MX or .444T or .444S :D
.308MX or .444T or .444S :D
Got nothing against any of those, I just don't want one. I am NOT a .308 Express basher.
If I could buy a Marlin 30-30 configured like the .308MX, I would go get it this afternoon. I don't understand Marlin's marketing but I guess they know their business better than I do.
Any speculation on when .308 express brass will be available? I'm thinking about changing my mind. :D

Ken,
Don’t know when the .308ME brass will be available.
If you are serious about a .357 Magnum rifle give some consideration to the shape of the bullets you intend you shoot.
My fathers Winchester Model 94 in .357 Magnum will feed ANY THING shoved through the loading gate - from the 200-grain RCBS bullet down to full wad cutters seated flush. Dad keeps a zip-loc bag full of action dummies with every bullet imaginable seated in the cases. When he meets a Marlin shooter he loads these up and levers them out with the rifle lying on its right side and upside down – he then invites the on-lookers to load up. No Marlin 1894 has ever successfully cycled Keith type semi wad cutters, the 200-grain bullets or the flush wad cutters.
No matter which rifle you must read the article by Beartooth forum member C. E. Harris: “Handloads For Handgun-Caliber Leverguns” from the 15th Edition of the Handloaders Digest (1996). The bottom line is for best accuracy you must change your throat angle. This is a relatively easy and worthwhile modification.
William, look at this rifle. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=81228523
Am I missing something or has the Winchester bubble burst?
As far as bullets, I really like those Saeco, round nose flat point, molds. The 180 grain seems like it would be just the ticket.

What a nice rifle. I have seen very few of the 24” barrel rifles. I have a friend who hunts Texas deer and pigs with a Navy Arms 24” .357 Magnum and he claims to need no other rifle. He hunts as I do, in heavy brush.
Compared to the prices I saw at the gun show today this one looks pretty good!
For 180-grain bullets in the Winchester Model 94 don’t overlook the NEI LBT style bullet, or one of Veral Smiths molds. A good start would be to try Marshals offerings to see what your rifle liked best. Dad’s Winchester and my .357 Maximum 21” TC barrel shoot the NEI bullet very well.

Go to page 8 and look for the .358 – 180 – PB #161A

Somebody else sure thought so, it was listed less than eight hours before it sold.
That NEI mould looks good, been meaning to try one of them.

I just hope to have more time to shoot in the my own match!
I did pick up a 336SC with the later, heavy barrel in 219 Zipper. I'm working on dies and brass now.
Speaking of brass, 308ME brass in particular. Jamison International is making a lot of this unusual brass readily available and it is affordable. I thought of starting a drive through a dealer to see if they would carry a request for the the 308ME to Jamison. I've written Graf & Sons and I'm waiting a reply as G&S seems to be the most complete dealer representing Jamison. You might soon see my request that you email G&S with this petition in mind.
