For starters, I'm a suburbanite in Tulsa, OK. I was raised away from firearms, but my brother got me started in the shooting sports a few years ago. I mostly do target shooting and plinking. I'd like to step up to varminting. I've got the rig I need coming in this weekend - it's a Savage 12FV in .243 with a Mueller Tactical 8.25-25x44 scope.
I really have no idea how to get started, though. Is there a club or group that I could join to learn the ropes and make the connections? Is there a way to contact ranchers and find out if there is a need/opening? Is there a license/tag that I need to purchase to hunt prairie dogs or ground squirrels?
Thanks!
Kyle
You won't find any prairie dogs around the Tulsa area. Gonna have to head to the far western part of the state and into Kansas/Colorado/Texas to find them.
Used to belong to the Red Castle Gun Club when living in your area to do my shooting. Best to check with local gun shops for contacts with other shooters. Also, attend the big gun show held at the Tulsa fair grounds this fall and ask around.

Yeah; I figured I'd have to head out west. No problem, though. I like long drives. I'll be sure to check around at Wanenmacher's.

Check around, there are a lot of PDs down around the Lawton area, might call some gun shops down there and find out some info, I remeber some friends doing a lot of PD shooting on some of the ranches down in that area. Just don't remember any details other than that. Grew up in that area, if you really want some fun, they are covered in wild hogs down there, pretty much every river bottom and creek around there has hogs all over it. My dad lives inbetween Carnegie and Ft. Cobb and shoots them on a regular basis out of the back pasture on the Was h i t a River there.

Heck yeah. Almost nothing's better than an imu-cooked hog. That sounds great. I was just down in the Lawton area this last weekend. Saw some prairie dogs (on the game reserve). :P Thanks!
