I've got the right church, but maybe I'm in the wrong pew-http://www.frontiernet.net/~cuttysark/IGGY/tup.gif
I just picked up a NIB Savage 40 and I'm alittle sad for trying to decide if converting it to K-Hornet is the FOB. Never using a hornet, only reading about them over the years, I see the upswings for increasing the shoulder angle, but I've developed a lazy attitude towards fire-forming and all that goes with it. I selected a hornet for the simple reason that I wanted to reload a cartridge with 22 WMR performance. I'll use collet dies but I know eventually I'll have to F/L resize and I've read and understood the issues with this mild-shouldered case. I'm not really wanting to improve its velocity, but if case life becomes a big issue...
I just want a nice 150-200 yard pop gun. I'm looking around for some used K-Hornet Dies, already picked up some Lil'Gun and CCI primers.

Is it really worth the all the fuss and whoopla?
Will the Savage action support the conversion?

I wrote an article praising the K-Hornet years ago.

Today, to be honest, LilGun gives the standard Hornet what going to the K did back then. Of course, LilGun gives the K version a kick also, but if what you want is a 150-yard gun just a tad better than a .22 Mag, then there's no need whatsoever to go to the K.

I shoot a Hornet a lot, and have no problem hitting prairie dogs or foxes out to 200 yards, and they are DRT. Even coyotes are easily reduced to room temperature.

A standard Hornet is WAY more gun than a .22 Mag. It'll take a 45-gr bullet to 2800+ fps and will launch some of the new 33-37 grainers to 3100. That's almost 1000 fps faster than a .22 Mag actually gets. BUT, you can load the standard Hornet to match everything from a .22 CB to darn near Fireball country.

Going to the K version may or may not add to case life, but I have no problem getting at least five reloads on standard Hornet cases, sometimes ten. For the cost difference between K and standard dies, plus the time and effort to fireform, I think that I have no desire to go K-ing again.
