View Full Version : Czech 7.62x54R - What Can You Tell Me About It?

Hi all,

I picked up some Czech "silvertip" 7.62x54R made in 1963.

When I went to research the stuff, I found a website that is selling it and claims that it's not corrosive.

I have a very hard time believing that. Does anyone have proof to the contrary?

Lessee... it's 147gr and doesn't seem to be driven as fast as some other stuff. I'll let my shoulder judge that here in a few minutes. It looks quite a bit like commercial Brown Bear but it's lighter. Is it considered mild AP?

How's the accuracy compare to other milsurp?

And, how are the local prices, meaning, no shipping? I'm wondering if I got a good deal.

Anything else?

Thanks,

Josh <><

I only payed $5 per 20, which seems to be the norm around here. It's a buck more than the Soviet stuff my rifle hates and a couple bucks less than my preferred Brown Bear 185gr.

Maybe it's still too expensive, but it's cheaper than paying shipping from the internet.

I found it to be very accurate.

Clean it like it's corrosive. You only have to be wrong once to learn that lesson!

Sellers don't always know what they have.

Mike,

I saw on an internet store that it's not corrosive. It surprised me that someone wouldn't do homework and find out.

Consider any former ComBloc/Eastern European ammunition to have corrosive primers. You might save some poor rifle from a terrible fate.

You can test it yourself. Pull the bullets, dump the powder, and pop a couple of primers at a clean, oil free steel plate. Watch closely for several days, and see if rust specks begin to appear. Of course, after popping the primers you won't know, and will still need to clean accordingly. Much easier to just assume it is corrosive.

The miss information that some "dealer" give would fill volumes! Even 1970's and '80's russian and bulgarian 5.45x39 is corrosive. The powder is not, but the primers are!
It's like advertising .308 Military surplus rifles. They don't exist. 7.62x51 Nato yes, but not .308. Jim
