I'm cleaning up an original old historical piece for a friend. It's all original except for a missing saddle ring but it has the original front site hood, very rare. Someone tried to drill out the retaining screw for the firing pin too. The rifle is badly rusted, many parts frozen. The metal is in a soak bath now.
It appears this rifle was given to the SC National Guard in the 1880's because it has SC on the heel of the butt plate.

Keep in mind this is a cleaning, no hard abrasion to anything. The stock has all the original inspection marks and I think I can at least get down to the rifliing in the bore.

It's neat working with something as old as this. Can't help but wonder what this old cannon may have seen.

If anyone has an extra saddle ring I'd love a shot at it. Gun Parts and Jack First don't.

Hello oconnorsun
I only have the one ring that is on my origional 1879 carbine. You can try S&S Firearms:www.ssfirearms.com or Numrich Arms:www.gunpartscorp.com.
A good place to find out what you have and how to work on it is www.trapdoorcollectors.com
Good luck;it's a fine rifle.
