I am interested in buying a Browning 71 (or possible Wildcat). I also think I would enjoy a Browning 1886 esp in Carbine.
I've looked at Guns America and Gun Broker. Are there any better ways to find a gun?

I bought both recently, within 4 months. Found both at gunshows.
They are a worthy pursuit.

Elkhunter1, keep your eyes open and check out the for sale adds at the different forums that you visit, like the "Trading Post" here. Generally they will be priced more reasonable and the people who are selling them are normally regulars to the site.
I just recently picked up a Browning 1886 SRC at the Leverguns site.

And right before the Browning I stumbled upon a original Winchester Model 71 at a knife forum of all places.

There was a set of 10 consecutively serial numbered Browning 71 carbines at the Bass Pro store in Las Vegas. I tried to buy one from them but they wanted to sell the whole set intact. The set sat there for a while but eventually some rich guy came by and bought the set.

Keep your eyes open for local gun auctions. Two years ago, I went to one and they had a M71 that appeared almost NIB, probably just fired a few times. I got it for I think $420 and would have gotten it for much lower had some guy not been bidding it up. Still it was a steal at that price.

If you download the latest CDNN catalog they are having a sale on NIB 1886's along with a several other varieties of lever action Brownings.

I have found that the butt plate on them SRC's is terrible to shoot as it has very sharp edges and really hurts on recoil.
For what is worth.
