OK
I'm bored and can not believe that only 6 weeks out from the MI rifle deer season there is narry a post on the subject.
What is the deer sign this year so far?
It has been a very hot fall, has this affected the rut? What about the deer kill from the winter and the effects of the wolves upon the herd?
I've had no reports. My brother is gong up next weekend for the intital scouting and some archery hunting as well as grouse hunting with his sons.
I'm dying here. Give me some news! I have a Marlin lever in 35 Rem that is just about jumping our of its gun safe wanting to draw blood. Could anyone give me some info I can feed myself and my rifle to sooth our souls???????

Eagleeye;
Deer sign around here is pretty sparse. Only 4 coming in to bait so far and very small. No signs of rut yet, Pretty warm. Winter kill was not much at all, very mild winter last year. Biggest problem locally is timber harvest. Too Much, Too Fast. Your family will enjoy some of the BEST grouse hunting in years. Birds are awsome this year. Rabbits way up too, Cannot believe no snow yet. Seen 52 degrees today, 20's at night. Too warm. Not complaing though, Saves wood and gas. Steve

Thanks for the update.
Where are you hunting at?
We hunt 4 miles north of Rock which is between Gladstone and Gwinn (or Escanaba and Marquette) just off M-35.
Remember I mentioned wolves. Well my brother and his sons were out grouse hunting (they got a few and it is better birds than in years). They literally saw a wolf as they were waiting out a rain shower under a pine tree. They said the wolf was NOT afraid of them at all. And in fact started to walk towards them until my Brother let out a yell.
I'm a bit dubious as to seeing many deer with wolves so nearby.
Although just this morning my brother saw a little spike while bow hunting. and he let it pass. He also has seen last weekend a doe and a little one (fawn) with it. and also let them go.
But other than that not much other deer sign. Not even any rubs to speak of and only one scrape. The deer are eating the bait at all the 5 sites. So we'll see.
I won't be able to make it to hunt until the weekend. I'll miss the opener this year. But my 13 year old daughter wanted to go up to camp with Dad and the guys. So I made the choice to let her miss two days of school and me miss the first two days of season so she could come with me. I think I made the right choice. No, I know I made the right choice :D She is not a hunter. She will sit in the stand with Grandpa (heated shack). I'm just glad she wants to go. Maybe next year she will want to grab a gun and hunt herself.
