I am moving from New Zealand to Western Australia midway through next year and would like to ask about fox hunting. I've seen a couple running about during trips across the ditch and understand that they're the closest thing to game in WA; certainly their pelts would be worthwhile trophies.

As I understand it, foxes in Australia are hunted at close range with .22s from a sedentary position; luring them with a rabbit call.

Is there a recreational shooter's association in Western Australia, through whom I could find more information about hunting in WA? I am keen to continue hunting in Australia and any correspondence concerning Australian hunting would be appreciated. I have also read a little about hog deer in Vic.

Welcome to the forum Hauroko. Hope you get some good info on the fox hunting. Here in Idaho where I live we don't have foxes, but I call coyotes every year with rabbit calls. It's a lot of fun and I'd almost rather do that than hunt big game anymore as I get older.

soon as your over, join the SSAA, its the national shooters body and they have sub groups that do hunting and feral pest removal as well as navigation, survival etc.

We have foxes in the south west here, its coming into a good time to chase them as well. We use the regular button whistles whilst spotlighting and its good to get their heads up for a shot at them, but I havent whistled any in so far. Believe me im trying though. Now hay season is nearly finished so people recommend mouse squeakers and scotch predator calls as well. Easier to see them coming with no grass around.

Make sure you find plenty of properties to shoot on. Any 22 cal would be fine for foxes, a 22 hornet worked for me for a while, though ive gone up the 22-250 now for other things as well

I will be working for a Perth based mineral exploration firm. My line of work takes me on to a lot of stations. I'm pleased to hear that the SSAA helps out with conservation issues.

If your going onto station country then dont get under a 22-250 and preferably i would say a 243 or 257 so you can do some pigging and goat shooting too.

I am from Victoria - Australia, north east of the state, and Fox time will be good from about November, easy to call in the young ones - there are plenty about - I use a .222 or my favourite .17 Ack Hornet.
