I bought some Herters dies on ebay for my 30-40 Krag. I bought them on friday and they were here today!!! I paid 20.00 for them total including shipping. I know they are old but they look like they were never used. They have like a cosmoline coating on everything that has hardened up. The seater plug and the decapper/expander were stuck in the dies. I managed to get them unstuck but the dies need to be cleaned up inside and out. Do they make Herters dies anymore? I've never heard of them till now.

No,Herter's went out of business 30 years ago,or more.
They are good dies, though.I still use some of the ones that I bought in the 1950's and 60's
Disssamble them and clean with solvent.
Good luck
Frank

I have a set of Herter's dies. They work fine. Try alcohol when cleaning. If that doesn't cut the crud try soaking them in gasoline. They should clean up real well.

Did you get the shell holder with the dies? If so, you'll have to get an adapter to use them with the modern presses.

Herter's was a seller like Sears, not a manufactor. They had dies branded for them by at least three makers, IIRC. All were made about as well as any other brand.

I got a new shell holder today. I could only find 5 empty casings laying around so I loaded some up with some old IMR4350 I had. I used Speer 150gr sp's. I made 2 with 50.0gr of powder and 3 with 51.0 the max is 51.3. They seemed to shoot pretty well I only tried them at about 25 yds but I got a nice little group. The loads with 51.0gr's gave a nice little fireball out the end of the barrel. I cant wait for hunting season now.
