I am in the market for a 20 gauge, single shot shotgun. I've decided on a brand new NEF Pardner. The only thing is, I'm not sure if I should go with a fixed full choke or a fixed modified choke.

The gun will be mostly used for bush chickens (partridge), but there may be the odd time I may want to shoot whitetail with it.

If I were using it exclusively for partridge, I would prefer the fixed full choke. Can anyone tell me if it is wise/safe/adviseable to shoot slugs through a fixed full choke barrel?

Any feedback would be welcome.

Thanks,
Savage Hunter

Go with the full choke and get the slug barrel from NEF. You can get it with rifle sights for $62 and with scope rail for $99 according to their web site. That's just about the cheapest way to get exactly what you want in your shotgun.

Give a real hard look at the new H&R Topper Deluxe Classic. Mine is a 20ga with the Mod choke tube. I have the imp cylinder tube on order. It's the nicest handling inexpensive ($160) single barrel I 've got. It has a vent rib and just handles nicely.

A friend had a NEF 12 guage with no choke because he cut it and squared it behind the choke. I was surprised how well it fired Foster type rifled slugs. We could hit soda cans consistantly at 50 yards and 100 yards was easily lung area groupable. I am sure that will cut down on your pattern and distance for the partridges I guess. The full choke will definately cut down on your slug range as groups will be large due to deformation.
