I have been testing a few loads with my 22-250 and havent had much success at all. Took the rifle to my gunsmith last week and he has fitted a timney trigger and glass and pillar bedded it properly, now its back to the reload bench.

The best results i have got so far is 1.5 inches at 150 yards, using remington brass, 32.8gr benchmark powder (benchmark 2 its labelled in aus), cci benchrest primers and 55gr sierra blitzkings.

I have a hunch that the rifle does not like this bullet so Im going to try the vmax next, but want to know if many people have had success with the speer 55gr TNT's around 3500-3700 fps.

Thanks

Changing bullet brands may do the trick, and I'd second your idea of trying VMax next.

Unless they've come out with another weight, the Speer TNT is a 50-grainer not 55, and I KNOW that they have a note on the box that the TNT is intended for muzzle velocities no higher than 3400 fps or 1-10 twist. They'll come apart in flight else.

Mine is an old Rem 788 with a few miles on it.
BUT...my .22-250 shoots great. Most of them will.
For powders I use 4064 or H-380. / CCI 200 primer. Any brass.

Bullets= Sierra 52 gr. Match.
The same powders will shoot 55s real well, too.

It's funny how a rifle may prefer one brand of bullet over another. Try dropping the weight down to 50 grainer's and do try several different brands of bullets. Some guns just like a certain weight or brand. Finding that "golden combo" is what drives most of us shooters and reloaders.

For around 30 years my go to the woods varmint rifle was the 22-250 in several different rifles. The past few years I've been shooting both a 243 and the 204 Ruger. My last 22-250 was a Ruger all weather standard barrel sporter in the old boat paddle stock. I bought it used with a twin in 300 Win mag. The 300 would cut one hole groups and the best I could get from any load out of the 250 was 2 to 2.5 inch groups.

I went thru 15 or 18 different bullets and several powders and nothing I could do would get that particular rifle to group. When I called and talked to Ruger's tech section they said if it grouped under three inches it met factory specs.

Sometimes you just got to cut your losses and either rebarrel or use that rifle for trading stock. I'd do some loading and see if you can get better groups, but you may just have to do something else. It sure sounds like your smith has done his best to get it to shoot.

I've only tried a few loads.

But my Ruger #1 in .22-250 just loves the Nosler 50gr BT's and a good sized charge of RL15.

I always have a stock of those loads on hand if I want to really do some good tack driving. My rifle is a sporter weight #1. 4x12 medium quality scope (Older Simmons).

The best 5 shot group i've ever printed with this powder/bullet combo was right @ .30" @ 100 yards.

It will do 1/2 MOA all day long if I do my part. :)

In my .223, I tried 55gr Sierras Blitz kings and Hornady SPSX, and the SPSX bullets shot better, hands down. Try this bullet (I dont think they make the SPSX, will have to use the SP which will take higher velocities) and see what happens.
I have always gotten better results with plain base bullets as opposed to boat tails.
Good luck.

Speer lists the 55gr tnt as a high velocity projectile. Must be a new addition.

I will definitely go to the vmax next and should those fail, I will look at dropping the weight. Im sure most will agree, if a vmax wont group then something else is wrong.

I shot a lot of ground squirrels with this.
Sierra MatchKing Bullets 22 Caliber (224 Diameter) 52 Grain Hollow Point Boat Tail

The Sierra matchkings seem to shoot best in my 7MM Rem Mag. Still working on that guy.

Nosler 50 gr. in front of h380 has produced very good results in my Savage.

I tend to work a rifle the other way. Pick a bullet that I have , or like and find a powder charge/ primer/ case/ seating depth that will make that load shoot!

This has not failed for me yet. If/when it does, I will change one thing at a time.
