Another Sucessful Pheasant hunt in Pa!

Went on another trip to Warriors Mark, a pheasant preserve in PA. Drove out in the pouring rain on Friday, and it rained all night into the morning. As we headed for the fields, the rain was torrential, but just as we parked the truck, it stopped and the sun came out.

we took 10 pheasants;
7 regular roosters, 2 hens and a mutant Black rooster.
hunt lasted about 5 hours, and covered alot of the 4500+ acreage, but not nearly all of it.

Any details on the black rooster? I've heard of them but have never seen one.

According to the family that breeds them for the preserve, it a hardier strain of the average pheasant.
I can tell you that the black roosters are bigger; that meaning they are broader across the chest, and taller. they also breed pure white pheasants, and the elusive goldens too.

Warriors Mark breeds them till they can fly, then releases to the wild of their acreage...resulting in wary "wild" birds, as opposed to pen raised runners, and take just about stepping on them to take flight!

You did well Chris! And some beautiful country that the deed was done in. But you seem to be holding out on us....thread says 11 birds - and I realize I was educated in Idaho - but 7+2+1 usually totals 10. :p Come clean now!

That could be. I might count it twice too; neat looking bird. :) I did relook at the 4th photo, and there is a bird in there, 4th from the left, that looks like it has a long beak like a woodcock or the elusive snipe, but I don't know my birds that well.

Interesting stuff on the black pheasant.

I was going to give you a hard time for hunting the pen-raised genius birds but I guess I can't :p . Looks like you had pretty easy walking though.

it was in fact 10 pheasants, but we did get 4 chukar too, and gave them to the guide. The birds in the pic are all pheasants.
The walk was fairly easy, the wood is fairly dense, but no brambles, which is great. The switchgrass was about six foot high, and soaked from the rain...so in turn we were soaked too! The wind eventually dried it out, but not before I wet a set of oilskins thru and thru....chaps and vest wet thru.

Just had to give you some grief Chris! Chukar season has opened here, but I haven't been out yet since I'm still holding my bull elk tag (the poundage payback is up there comparatively!). My neighbor has been out chasing them and doing very well. I'll probably start chasing the tasty little birds in November with my geriatric dogs.

As much as I enjoy hunting chukar for their speed, I'd prefer to eat the pheasant over the chukar. They are tasty, but pheasant.....well there's nuthin' like em.....'cept for perhaps fresh quail or fresh wild turkey...

Dang, 6am here and your'e making me hungry for some bird!

I was hoping to get out tomorrow and do some grouse hunting, but have been asked to work overtime, and could use the $$$ more than the birds. So, for at least a week, the birds have gotten a reprieve!:D
