I know that the Win 94 pre 64 models used some machined parts whereas the post 64 used some steel stamped parts.

Is there a thread somewhere or other place where I can find out what part were changed from machined to stamped in 1964?

The reason for this interest is that I have a post 64 that is chromed and I wish to convert it to the pre 64 standards of machined parts.

Any help is appreciated.

Sorry if this item has been previously talked about but I can not find the thread (if there is one - which I think there is)

The early Post-64 models had a stamped sheetmetal lifter(?terminology) that was notorious for jamming and not being able to retain its shape. A fellow hunter friend of mine had one that jammed in the field and, while trying to free it, managed to blow a hole thru his kitchen wall and into his garage putting holes in his then new '69 Pontiac Catalina. My understanding, if memory is serving me correctly, Winchester changed this part back to a machined version similar to the pre-64's. It is easy to inspect the "Post" models for this change.

Good luck, Gene(P.S. - don't count on these parts being interchangeable between "pre's" and "post" models.

Here is a great photo essay by J Miller on the changes.

Thanks. That is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately I have the early post 64 model stamped blue carrier that everyone agrees is a POS. I wonder if I can change it out for the later post 64 cast carrier?

Thanks again

It should swap out no problem. One of my Model 94's is a 1965 with the stamped carrier and I have had no problems with it at all. I'll keep it as long as it works, first sign of any problems I'll swap it out.

Salvo,
Thanks for posting my thread. How ya doin?

Win94 Chrome,
I know none of us really like the stamped carriers used in the early Post-64s, but for the most part they do work. I've owned and used about all the versions from early 1900s to 1985 and have not had one single failure of any of the carriers. And I don't baby my leverguns. Nor do I abuse them.

Some years ago the Numrich catalogs had a parts schematic for the early 94s that showed the cast carrier as a replacement for the stamped one. If I remember correctly you needed to replace the link as well. I never needed to replace one so I don't know this from experience.
