View Full Version : Model 94 firing pin free floating or spring loaded?

Hi there, new to the forum and happy to have found it.

My question is, I have a new 94 .30-.30 and was wondering if the firing pin is supposed to be loose (allowed to slide in its channel) or if there supposed to be a spring that keeps it held into position before the hammer strikes it.

Currently, the pin in this gun just kind of hangs there and will slide in or out on its own if you tilt the gun back and forth (while the hammer is retracted). There is nothing in there holding it in one position or the other. This is my first lever gun and it just kind of seems odd that the pin would have that kind play in it. Is this normal?

I had a few misfires at the range and was wondering if this may be the source of the problem. There was a decent indentation in the primer and it sure looked as though the pin struck properly. However, 2 misfires out of 16 shells seems pretty undependable.

Any advice?

Thanks a million!

JAC,

Winchester 94s, all versions, use free floating firing pins.
The later models with the rebounding hammers have a skeletonized pin that is much lighter than the older ones.

Sometimes there is a problem with main spring strut and it's four fingers or legs that prevent the hammer from impacting the firing pin with full power.
I don't know the fixes because I don't own a 94 with a rebounding action.

There is some threads in here: http://leverguns.sixgunner.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=32636 that can help you with it.

Sometimes just taking it apart and cleaning out all the junk and debris that build up, or get left in by the factory will cure the problems.

Thanks a bunch J Miller.

I appreciate the reply, and the link. Lots of great info to sort through there. I gave the whole receiver and action a good blast with Gun Scrubber and will give it another go at the range as soon as I can.

Thanks again!

.

If you have a tang safety model then that is a common issue. They suffer from improper clearence in the area of the tang safety that causes mis-fires.

Make sure the ammo is not the source-bad primers etc.
