I would be interested in hearing from anyone who owns a Ruger No.1 in 7x57? How do you find the recoil compared to other calibres ? Have you taken it overseas ? How does it perform on African Plains Game ? Any opinions and comments appreciated.
P.S. I own a Ruger No. 1B in .218Bee so am familiar with 'the brand'.

I have that very rifle and have found it to be the most pleasant to shoot big game rifle I've owned. I've used a 30-06 for many years and shot game with other rifles including a .338 Mag. The 7x57 is excellent for a lady or teenager. I've shot a number of bucks with it using 154gr Hornaday handloads and it does almost no damage to the meat. I only take lung shots and meat damage at entry is about 1 1/2" and exit about 1" more. A fellow named Bell, I believe hunted and killed a great many elephants using solid bullets, but I don't believe I'd recommend that. Keep it for critters on the North American Continent, but get a bit more power if you want to go after grizzlies or Kodiak bears. It will handle anything else if you can place your bullets accurately.

the 7 by 57 is a great cartridge and the Ruger #1 sure is a beautiful rifle. I have a #1 in 243 that was my first #1 in over 45 years of hunting and I really love it. My grand daughter has confiscated it for her varmint and deer rifle.
I Shoot the Americanized version of the 7 by 57 for a deer rifle, the 280 Remington. Performance is very close and it just whacks deer. It should work on any plains game up to the size of elk with no problems and work very well on Australian game short of water buffalo.

I have a Ruger No.1 RSI in 7x57. Great rifle and cartridge. I hate to speculate, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't work well on plainsgame up to the size of Eland if matched with the right bullets. I would really try to pick my shots on the Eland, though...

On a side note Jack O'Connors wife used a 7 by 57 in Africa for all her light game hunting.
I have a Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57. I love the rifle. Mine wears a Leupold 1.5-4.5 scope.
I think you'll find the recoil to be nothing to worry about.
I've never hunted African game with it, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so.

I own a Ruger 7x57RSI. I have to say that it is one of the sweetest shooting rifles I have ever owned...(approximately 50 in various center fire calibers). I use a handload of 46.1 grains of IMR 4350 powder pushing a 175 grain Remington pointed soft point core-lokt bullet in Remington brass with CCI #200 primers. Recoil is moderate enough for nearly any lady to handle, no visible indication of excessive chamber pressure, and accuracy enough to consistently hit 4 1/2" clay pigeon stood upright against a dirt bank at a measured 200 yards from a rest. This is from a rifle with a 20" barrel. I did a chronograph average of 5 rounds of this load with this rifle and got an average of 2400 fps 15 feet from the muzzle. you can get a good idea of ballistic performance from the external ballistics calculator at realguns.com. I use this rifle for hunting everything in western Washington state (deer, bear, and elk in particular) and believe it to be adequate for what I use for. I compares to a 308 Win. with factory loaded 180 gr. bullets but is more pleasant to shoot. Remember making the choice to pass on long range questionable shots (over 300 yards - I know I'll get lots of flack from all the wannabe long range "experts" on that one) and placing the first shotwhere it needs to go is the secret to making clean kills. Hope that sheds some light on it for you. Good luck :)

My #1 7X57 is the #1A, it sports a 22 inch barrel. It is sub MOA with a 140 grain balistic tip over 50 grains of H-414.
I get 2900 FPS from that load.
For the type of hunting you are talking about, I would consider a 160 grain barnes or nosler partition , if the game gets up over about 300LBS. But for any thing smaller the 140 GR bullets should do fine...tj3006
