View Full Version : Savage 40 Extraction Issues

I have a brand new Savage model 40 in 22 Hornet, and its got some extraction issues. A resized case will not extract, only factory rounds. I can't seem to figure out why the extractor is letting go of the rim when the bolt is closed. Using Lee Collet Dies won't size the case's web, only the neck, and I'm wondering if other Savage users of this model experience something similar.

When I put a case between the claws, it has a very good bite on the rim. When I bring the bolt almost closed, I can extract the resized case. If I close the bolt handle all the way down, then lift the handle up again, the case remains in the chamber.

I'm assuming the problem solver would be to use a full-length die, but that's not what I'm wanting to do. A fired case fits the chamber perfectly, hence the point of neck-sizing for greater accuracy.

I just called Savage a moment ago, and they told me to send them the gun and they would 'check it out'. The lady asked me what happens when I told her that I had to use a pocket screwdriver to pry the case out of the chamber.

Not having used any reloaded ammo in this gun yet, I'm glad. But If someone has any similar experience with extractions with this model, I'd appreciate any comments you all have to add on the matter.

If the sticking issue is with loaded reloads and you are chambering but not firing the cartridges. you may want to check the over all length of your reloads. The bullet may be sticking into the rifling/lands and causing the bind...

Not the case here =(
Using 40 gr VMax, setting bullets to touch the lands prevents ejection- the ejector blade on the loading ramp isn't far enough back for the loaded round to clear the front of the port.

This sticking issue happens with a case resized in a collet die, even if the case is empty. I was wondering abouit a full-length die with the spindle removed, then run the resized caae into the collet die??

Winded for sure, but I think I'm gonna call Savage again and get a RMA number.

Has anyone heard of Savage making an improved model 40???? I read about it somewhere, could just be a rumor.

Thanks

I used lee neck dies also and i replaced them with hornady full length dies.my 40 is working like a champ! shooting a quarter at 100 yards aint bad for a full sized case.ps I load with 12.8 grains of lil` gun and a 35 grain v-max .020 off the rifling. hope this helps you .ken

You bet it helps. And a big thanks for the heads up.
I sent the gun back to Savage. They said it was way out of spec and never should have got past QC. They sent me a new rifle to my home Friday along with 50 fired cases of Rem Premier and Horndady. Super sweet and the Savage folks were a pleasure to talk with. We know each other by name now. Great folks indeed.

The first loads thus far have been 9.5 grains of LiL'Gun w/Hornady 40 grain VMax Moly and CCI BR prime.
5 shots printed .896 and I see great promise in the gun. The bullets were seated way deep into the neck to facilitate ejection. But like you say, moving it up near the lands should bring her right on home.

That LiL'Gun sure has a crack sound to it.

What's your case life using F/L dies now?
I was hoping to extend life using the collet dies?

Hi wbysubmoa ! sure glad things are working out for you. I have f/l sized a few of my cases 5 times . not sure when to quit ? I like neck sizing also but the model 40 gets a little tight on extraction after 2 neck jobs. maby all hornets do the same because of the bottelneck shape? thanks. Ken.
