Hi all,
Has anyone ever shot the 375 JDJ out of a T/C Contender, 14 inch barrel? I read that it has taken elephants in the early 80s. I have a 7x30 waters now but want something bigger for critters bigger then deer. Any thoughts? Bye the my hat is off to this site its great!

About 20 years ago I had a 14",.44mag bbl, rechambered into .444Marlin. This was done by the "famous" T/C guy,J.D. Jones. It was the first such firearm of the like in my area and was quite the talk of the town. I took several moose with the weapon while living in Maine. Also several of the bigger deer.
It shot very good with the Hornady 265's and the Sierra 300's, with <1.5" @ 50yds the norm.
I never tried any of the hardcast bullets and now that the higher tech bullets(Barnes, etc,) have come of age, the weapon would be even more interesting.
The .444Marlin T/C concept has several things going for it. You can seat the bullets out to be very close to the lands for improved accuracy. Also I found the T/C action strong enough to handle my hot handloads.
I would think that the .375JDJ(yeah,the same Jack D. Jones that rechambered for me)would have the advantage for the 150+ yard hunting, but for <150yd hunting, with a well built Barnes or a hardcast, the .444 would be great. -----pruhdlr

I have one in the Encore. Right now it is apart to get a muzzle brake at SSK. I did not find the recoil unbearable with factory loads. I have several hundred 300 gr FMJ bullets I bought a few years ago and have been shooting them out of it. They are not really unpleasant up to 1400 fps. Haven't tried any faster yet. This setup has a lot of potential for accuracy and power in my opinion.
I have a 450 Marlin barrel that has a muzzle brake and it is OK with 420 gr cast to 1300-1400 fps. Beyond that it is shootable for 3 or 4 rounds them I am done.

i have a 45-70 brl. for my contender and its controlable w/ a 420 gr. wln, i cant imagine a 375 jdj being heaver recoil than a 45-70. there is recoil there but i doesnt rip your hand off. btw i have a pacmeyer gripper grip, it does help w/ recoil some.
