I just did a tally on the deer I have killed in this one small area of a small 17 acre wood lot. It came to 5. 3 with the bow, one with the 44 Marlin Lever and now one with the new Tikka.
I had just got settled in the API Grand lock on, probably the most comfortable lock on made, that overlooked the creek bottom and provided good coverage of the bench and ridge. Sign has been hard to see because of the dry conditions but the change in temps had to have the bucks moving and this morning this little rascal was. He slipped in right behind me and I saw him the first time when he came out from behind the left side of the tree. When deer are this close, they always seem to know they have made an error. I never look at them. Eye contact is a no-no at 10ft. As usual he had me pegged but I knew if he did not catch my scent I would be OK. Because of the leaffy wear and no movement he was satisfied but not happy as he tried to find a line around me but not wanting to run like a spotted- #$% ape, like he knew he should.(They get a little cocky in the rut.) He revealed a shot after going behind a screen of Dogwood leaves and I dropped him on the spot with a neck shot at less than 20 yds. He never raised his head but kept moving something and I was not going to trail this deer. I placed another in the neck.
Got my son to help me drag him out and perform the required work to change this game to the delectable food God meant it to be.
