Howdy,
First time user here, I'm from North Texas and recently just aquired my first lever action "winchester". This carbine is one made for Sears and is on the pre 64 action. I got this carbine especially to make a replica rifle, 24 inch barrel crescent stock etc. my problem is i cant seem to find a reasonably priced 24 inch barrel in 30-30. Now to my question, Gun Parts
Corp. has 24 inch 38-55 barrels for less than 100.00, the winchester Tech said it was not just a plug and play to convert this to 38-55, several things had to be changed also. Have any of you guys did this conversion? What is involved? any advice you can give is appreciated including where to find a reasonably priced 24 inch 30 -30 barrea.

Respectfully

I just did one for a friend and it is sure not a parts swap. The carrier and cartridge guides are OK but the NAC barrel has very little taper and the forend cap tenon dovetail sits to low. You can buy a forend cap from GPC or Winchester Bob and spread it enough to fit the NAC barrel then buy a undrilled forend cap tenon from Winchester Bob, drill and tap it to compensate for the tenon dovetail. The head space was to tight in the post 64 gun that I did but facing the breech of the barrel .003 took care of that. You'll have to get a precision gun works forend blank and inlet it to that oddball size barrel. Or, you could order a 94 replacement barrel from Wind River and use pre 64 rifle parts to complete it but the barrel would be about $400 in the white and about $650 rollmarked and rust blued well worth the money if you are doing a pre 64 gun.

Oh yea, I just found this forum and this is my first post. I really love 94's and I have a bunch of original and made up by me pre war guns. I'm doing a 16" 94 short rifle 38-55 SN 21XXX on a Wind River barrel right now or as soon as the barrel gets here.

Welcome to the forum both of you guys. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.

I'm not a lever guy, but it sounds like you already got some good advice. We have a bunch of lever guys here that may be able to add some to rhlowe's fine post.

Hi Bob,

My wife and I toured Peck last week-end. We just drove thru the Metro area and not urban sprawl. We went to Lewiston and returned by way of Peck and Orfino.

THANK YOU!!!!!

This doesn't really pertain to this thread so much, but it has certainly helped me out and answered a question that has been bugging me. I have a Winchester 1890 .22 (DOM 1913) that doesn't have the original barrel - it has a generic octagon barrel - and I thought it would be nice to have that restored, but I didn't really know where to go to have that done. It wouldn't be "original", but it would at least say "Winchester" on the barrel again.

Patrick:

You might try Michael Hunter http://www.hunterrestorations.com/Parts.html If you are happy with your barrel, he probably has the rolls for an 1890. I'd measure the barrel across the flats and compare it to an original before spending the money on roll marking the barrel that you have.

MTN60My Winchester 94 target rifle wears the .30-30 version of that NAC .38-55 barrel.

1st: The Sears mdl is a POST '64. If you carefully look inside the disassembled receiver look at the web across the action slightly behind where the cartridge guides are... it will have a slight "plum" or "rose" color to it. That's your first clue to the post '64 to '81 receivers.

2nd: The good news is, that it's just a straight exchange of parts. The only difficult part is correctly headspacing the new barrel. I had a gunshop verify mine. Wood may not be currently available from Numrich for that barrel, as they get theirs from Precision Gunstocks whose factory was destroyed by fire. But... they may have some still in stock, as they don't fit a standard octagon barrel, their barrel is .835 across the flats with NO taper, whereas a standard octagon has some taper.

Generally speaking, the .38-55 will feed thru .30-30 cartridge guides. Its the same basic cartridge, and Winchester has used the same guides for both calibers since... well sometime since the late 1910s or so.

Look for the parts noted for this swap under the parts listing for Winchester 94 POST 64 (http://e-gunparts.com/products.asp?chrMasterModel=0950z94%20POST%2064&MC=).

Nice rifle. who did the wood? I have some extra fancy wood coming from Treebone, but I really don't like doing the wood. I can but not my cup of tea. I'd like to find someone who can put the wood on the gun with the same quality and fit that Winchester did.

As for being post 64 I really don't know. I think Sears had both. Pull the forend off the gun and look at the recess in the front of the receiver for the wood. If it is a lip around the edge of the receiver it's pre. If it is a large circular recess around the mag tube it's post. either way the NAC barrel is cheap and it will make a cool gun. Oh yea the forend tip that NAC has is post 64 which has the screws to high causing the problem I mentioned above the screw holes are approximately .100 lower on a pre 64 tip. They list a pre 64 forend tip but when my buddy ordered it they sent another post 64 tip. Not unusual for NAC/GPC.
