From what I have heard from customers, the .204Ruger is a lot like the 17HMR; just about all the guns chambered in it are real shooters. One of the guys I used to work with at Gander had the H&R Varmiteer in .204 topped with a cheap Barska varmint scope. I SAW the 300yds. target....maybe 1.5" for three shots!
Personally, I would buy the one with the best trigger...Savage, CZ, if they make one, etc.

Well remington708 all the ones you talk about are good rifles. The one I like comes with a beautiful single set trigger that breaks at a few ounces set and three pounds unset and shoots half inch or smaller groups. Add to that it's a controlled round feed Mauser action designed around the cartridge size instead of an action designed for a 308 sized case and blocked down for the 223 sized case and you have a rifle actually made for the small case size of the 204.

I've been plunking varmints for 45 years now and for 30 plus my go to the woods varmint rifle was a 22-250. The 204 shoots as flat as the 250 with the advantage of recoil forces that allow you to see your hits thru the scope, or better yet your misses so you can adjust for the next shot.

Here's a five shot group off the bipod at a hundred yards.

My old hunting partner was so impressed with the accuracy, low recoil and handling of my CZ 527 that he bought one up at Sportsman's Warehouse in Spokane new a few months ago for $539.00. He put a Burris 4.5 by 14 scope in Millet adjustable rings on it. The new one's weigh the same, but now come with a 24 inch barrel instead of the 25.5 incher.

Here's the little beauty. 7.2 pounds with a medium heavy 25.5 inch barrel makes it both a dandy walk around and coyote set rifle and with superb accuracy a dandy rifle in the ground squirrel fields.

I shoot two other varmint rifles, a Remington VLS heavy barrel in 243 and at 12 pounds it's just to heavy for a calling rifle though it works well in the ground squirrel fields.

I also shoot a Ruger #1B in 243 that was my calling gun til my grand daughter claimed it for her deer and varmint rifle and I replaced it with the 204.

All of these models are available in the 204, but only the CZ 527 action is designed around the 223-204 cartridge size.

Jim I used to hunt Vasser meadows up out of Boville and a bunch of other areas up that way. With gas prices I haven't done so much of that in the last few years. Most of those meadows held shooting populations of ground squirrels and thay also make for good coyote calling sets. Lots of coyotes up in the Moscow country. Good luck in your choice. If you'd like I'd be glad to get togather some time and let you shoot my CZ. Drop me a PM.
