If so then please let me hear about your hunt. I'm gathering information on this subject for inclusion in an article I am writing, and would love to have your input. I need to limit the input to only pistol calibers though, got more than enough on the 30-30.

Thanks, and Happy hunting!

Your mssion is complete.
All that you need for hunting with the Winnie'94 is the 30/30 data.
Congratulations

I have no pics, but I took a Vermont whitetail 6 pointer at about 60 yards with my 45 colt Winnie trapper 16" about 3 years ago. I was shooting from the ground, in a mess of Brambles and boulders. The fodder I fed the Trapper was handloaded Beartooth Bullets, over Hodgdon 110 [265 keith if I remember correctly]. The deer was hit and went about 12 paces, and it was over. There was a quarter sized entry wound, and the exit was about as big as a tennis ball, or clenched average fist. Never recovered the bullet.
There were no mods done to the rifle, except for a touch of flourescent paint on the front sight. weather was a typical November overcast cold day, about 35 degrees.

It was a small deer, and I gave it to the land owner for allowing me the use of his property.

Okay, ......but for the article I really need any real world examples of the rifle chambered in pistol caliber being used for hunting purposes.
I can still use your experience with the 30-30, just that I have a few already.

Fantastic! You plan on using your 45 Colt Trapper again anytime soon?

Not this year, unless I do a late trip with my father. I have been upland hunting for the past few years, and find it quite a challenge and very enjoyable....dare I say more so than deer hunting.
I would love to use it on a boar hunt, but NJ does not have Boar, and I do not feel the preserve/fenced animals are a hunt...so in a sence, no.
I always wanted to try loading a 45 colt shotshell per se, to clobber a grouse or whatnot that wandered into range...but I guess that is what Winchester had in mind when they introduced the 9410...

on the previous story, that was the first time I ever used a pistol caliber carbine for a hunt, and it impressed the snot out of me! Had my Ruger Stainless Blackhawk on as a side too, with the same loads.

since then, I have purchased a used 44mag marlin 1894, in a 20" gun, that I hope to do the same hunt with some day. I'm in the market for a winnie trapper in 357, and will find one eventually.

I have a 94 trapper in .44 mag. I've been using it to hunt deer (and ocassionaly black bear) for about 15 or 16 years now but have yet to get anything with it! I hunt public land where the deer tend to disappear after the first couple days. I do it mainly just to spend a little time in the woods.

Years ago I took it out for suirrel a few times using light cast bullet loads, but again, never got anything. (I'm not the most successful hunter at actually getting game! :p ) Several years ago Pennsylvania made it illegal to use anything but rimfire rifles for small game so I won't be using it anymore.

It's a fantastic little carbine for beating brush though. Very easy to carry and quick to shoulder. I used to have a 4x scope on it but it took away from it's ease of carry so I reverted back to iron sights. I typically use handloads with either 240 or 300 grain Hornady XTPs over H110. Both loads group about 3 to 4 inches at 100 yards - not great, but good enough for big game.

Sometimes I'll carry a Single Action Army clone in .44 special as a companion. If not, I still take a few .44 special rounds in case I need a close range finishing shot. A low velocity 240 grain SWC behind the ear should end things quick without doing excessive damage!

Wish I could offer more in the way of performance on game - maybe in a few weeks I'll have something to report.. ;)

Best of luck to you this year. Maybe you can come to Texas sometime and shoot some wild hogs with your .44, we're inundated with the critters and your rifle would serve you well in this target rich environment.

Hogfest III here in S.Texas is coming up in March and we still need to fill some slots; just a thought in case you don't get to shoot something by the end of the year.

Happy Hunting!

Hope you have good luck this year. Wanted to point out that you and your father are welcome to come down and shoot some wild hogs in March 2008 during Hogfest III, or for that matter, whenever your schedule permits; it's a low fence operation & the hogs are all free range.

I'd be happy to help arrange a hunt for you both, give you some options depending on the accomodations you're seeking and steer you clear of the high fenced places that prey on the inexperienced.

Shoot straight, often and safely.-

I'd love to come to Texas to hunt hogs, but I don't see being able to either afford it or have the time anytime soon. Thanks, though!

What? No interest in the best 94 chambering of all-the 356Win? I killed a buck with my 356 at 200 yards with a Saeco 250 grain cast bullet. Never mind, not a pistol caliber!

I killed 2 deer with my 45 colt trapper over the Thanksgiving holiday. The first one was a small spike buck at 30 yds. shot with a 300gr. xtp and a lot of H110. The bullet broke both shoulders and stayed just under the hide. I don't believe it even twitched. The bullet stayed together, expanded very large and ended up weighing 227grs. I was impressed. The second deer was a average size doe. She was shot with the same load at about 75 yds. The bullet hit her in the last rib and angled up, breaking the offside shoulder, but once again not exiting. This deer ran about 100 yds before piling up. Same bullet performance. My only complaint was a lack of blood trail. Hopefully I'll have time to get a couple more before season ends. Next time I'll use the thick jacketed 300gr. xtp mag bullet for better penetration. This was my first year hunting with a lever action and it won't be my last. I didn't feel undergunned at all with a pistol cartridge and the trapper sure was nice to carry. Next year I see heavy cast bullets in my future!

Yup, use those 300gr. cast bullets and you'll have a much better chance of a bullet exit and blood trail. I've shot them lengthwise through a pig and they still exited.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Were 1894 Winchesters chambered in "pistol" calibers? What year did that start? Wasn't the 1892 rifle chambered in 38-40,44-40, 32-20 and 25-20? Are these "pistol" calibers?

I don't know when the 1894's were chambered for pistol calibers but anyone using them for hunting is welcome to submit the particulars of their hunt.

Yes, the 38-40, 44-40, 32-20 and 25-20 qualify as pistol calibers.
