So I figured out that my "new" used wingmaster was made in 1979. It does not say use only 2 3/4 shells or anything along those lines on the receiver.
It has no barrel, and I would like to know if they all at that point are tested for 2 3/4" shells as well as 3", or just 2 3/4" so I'll know what kind of barrels to look for.
Can you guys help?
Thanks,
Patrick

My 870 says mag right on the receiver. Twas me to be SUPER SURE I'd call Remington and ask 1-800-243-9700... The only answer I'd trust 100%. Syoot well and safe

At that time, 2 3/4" was the standard chamber length in 12 gauge Model 870s. If it was a magnum, the receiver would be marked as such. Hope this helps. Take care...

Oberndorf is correct, Remington shotguns of that period were marked if they were magnums. However, in the 870, I've found no difference except that 'magic word'. I would try to find a barrel from that period because it will match the better finish and if the barrel said 2 3/4" or 3", I would not be concerned. If YOU are concerned, just shoot the shorter shells, the receiver could certainly handle that.
