What do you guys think? Boddington tested the 338 RCM in the latest G&A.

The cases are 2" long and supposedly based on a shortened 375 Ruger. Looks to me lilke they've got a beltless, 350 Remington Mag that's been necked down to 338 and 308 diameters.

SHould give enhanced performance over 308 Win and 338 Federal with normal handloading. But will need Hornady's magic powder for full effect.

I'd hoped for something that would be chambered in the 30-06 length action..maybe later?

Waste of money. Craig Boddington thinks that anything Ruger asks him to test is the next best thing on the market. He used to shoot nothing but custom stuff, but I guess he's on their payroll now. We have all the calibers we need, the rest is hype. 338 Magnum, 338 Federal, 338 Ruger. Just wait until someone blows themselves up trying to interchange the ammunition. Personally, I like the 30-06 length action, especially when its on a 30-06.

For the standard length action both the 338 and the 358 Norma mag are excellent choices already on the market. I like Remington's old 8mm mag about the best of the big bore high velocity stuff. 220 grain spitzer boattail at 3080 fps, but you need a magnum length action for that one.

Most things involved with shooting and hunting are a waste of money. Nobody needs anything more or less than a 30-06. All of us feel we have the hot ticket. If you're not shooting this caliber you're wasting your time and money. Elephants have been killed with 22LR and squirrels with 458 mags. Are they the right tools for the job? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. We want to try "new and different" things. They accomplish the same exact thing as the old standards but they take a slightly different twist. Some like blondes, some like brunettes, and some like red heads. I think you get where this is going. I shoot a 270WSM. I like it a lot. Is it better than the 308 I gave up? In a word, NO. But it's mine and it shoots great. WSM's, SAUM's, Lazzeroni's, and RCM's kill no better or no worse than 30-30's, 308's, 06's blah, blah, blah...........Shoot straight and keep them in the kill zone. Have a great day. :D

I'd sure like to see what a 338 or 358 would do in that new 375 RUger case that holds over 100 gr of water. THe 338 Win and the 358 Norma cases are about 86 gr +/-.

Would be fun!

Most of the gunwriters think EVERYTHING they test is the greatest thing on the market.

Sort of an odd turn from the 70's-80's where they'd pan everything new as being completely useless and inadequate because the throat angle didn't suit them or the bullet base took away one kernel of powder space in the case

I can't see these as being necessary, but they might sell Ruger a few guns.

Geez - with an attitude like that, we'd all still be driving Model "T" Fords, because they were perfectly adequate to get folks from one place to the other! :D

Have to agree that the ol' 30-06 (for we US guys - the .303 Brit for the Commonwealth folk) is the standard of big game cartridges for 99.9% of all hunting. It's also boring!!!! (Hey, I've lost count of how many I've owned).

The name of the game is to acquire as many toys as financies and spouse allow. This keeps the economy going and sates that hunger for something new to play with.

One of the reasons there's a few wildcats in my vaults - I've got'um and no one else has'um!! :p

And I guess we should all still be driving a Model T Ford too. This is what makes America great, no matter how good a product is, someone will make one a little bit better. Some folks are perfectly happy with the good old original but some must have the newest technology. I think this is what is called MARKETING. I too think the 30-06 is one of the best calibers made but heck, I like my 243, 308, 6.5X55, 444, 45-70, and etc, etc.

Good old 30-06 is right. My father-in-law just "checked" his 1959 featherweight. 1" bull, 3-shots, 100 yards, Core-Lok 165's. The action on that gun is unreal, feels like its on ball bearings. Wish we could have those kinda guns back. I wish they would spend more money making what we've got better than a cartridge that goes 150 fps faster. Just think if those fellas at Winchester had the machinery we have today.......
