Still into the information/parts gathering phase of the ’67 Win 94 rework project http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=41237. I bought a Williams 5D receiver sight to replace the damaged original rear sight (don’t want to scope it, but I have a hard time seeing traditional sights). Had to put it on to check it out, and front that the front sight RAMP was cocked off to one side.

It looks like it was a factory mistake. Since the rifle is being reworked anyway, I want to put it into the correct position. Does anyone have any experience with moving the front sight? Is the ramp silver soldered on? When reattaching, should I silver solder (only done it once, in high school, 30+ years ago, but have the equipment), or should I use JB-Weld? Any other suggestions?

As for the rest of the project, I’m going to replace the worst of the rust damaged parts, and am thinking about keeping the barrel at its original 20” length. Had to re-cut the crown because of rust damage. After filling in all of the pits on the barrel with JB-weld, will use duracoat for the metal refinishing.

My projects take a long time (work & army reserve get in the way), but I’m sure that I’ll drop by with some more stupid questions.

Thank you for the help!

Take off the sight. It's dovetailed into the ramp and a brass punch or sight remover tool available from Midway or Brownell's will take it off.

If there are no screws holding the ramp on it's a good bet it's silver soldered on. If you plan on removing this with a torch keep in mind you need to put an anti-scale inside the barrel for the first 4 inches or you may damage the rifleing with the heat it takes to melt silver solder.

Silver soldiering sights is not a big deal and if you use Brownell's flat strip solder that you just place between the sight and the barrel it's much easier. Be sure to use some chalk to outline your sight so you don't mess up the blueing.

Keep in mind there are no stupid questions, only knowledge you don't have and the folks here are happy to share their knowledge with you.

If I havn't done so welcome to the forum.

Before resoldering the sight ramp, you should check if the 5D is square to the reciever. When I attached a FP to my Win 94 BB, I had to put a shim strip between the reciever and the FP base to correct the angle.

Through the peep it looked as the front sight was cocked left, but in fact the windage bar of the FP leaned to the right. A thin strip from a beer can and some Loc-Tite cured the leaning. :)

Thank you for the suggestions and advice. Unfortunately, the front sight is the problem. You can see that it is tilted just by looking at it and referencing it to the Mag screw, the rear sight, and other hardware on the barrel.

You might consider having a gunsmith check it to see if he could turn the barrel in enough to get the sight straight. I'm a bolt guy so I don't know how much a slight turn will effect headspace, but that might be better than taking off the sight and redrilling or re-soldering it.
