Had a weird issue this weekend sighting in my Slug gun for the VA deer season.

2005 Savage 210F Slug Gun

I use 2 3/4 Lightfields (yeah I know I'm suppose to use 3" shells, I bought a couple boxes of the other before I knew) as my primary ammo. I bought the gun new 2 years ago and has performed flawless for me. So I shot one two rounds before I the third gave me problems. I pulled the trigger and click. I unracked the shell and saw that a faint dimple had been imprinted on the primer, it wasn't as deep as the other two shells. I put it back in the gun and tried to shoot it again. Still nothing.

For fear of the shell exploding I cut it in half and empty the powder. So I put two more rounds through the gun and worked fine. I thought eh, maybe a bad shell or something. But then I grabbed one of the 3" magnum Lightfield shells I bought just to see where this one would hit before packing it in for the day. Same funny thing, the shell didn't go off, a faint dimple, so I tried it again and this time the 3" shell went off.

So I'm a little perplexed as to what to think the problem is. Total life of the gun has only experienced around 2 dozen shells. Modification done last year was a Savage SharpShooter adjustable trigger, but I never had a problem with it since yesterday. Not sure if the trigger even has anything to do with it. Maybe it could have had some dirt in the pin or need more lube oil in the firing pin assembly?

Looking for some thoughts as to what it may be?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Clean the bolt out. There is some crud, dried grease, metal shavings, etc., that are preventing the firing pin from moving all the way forward.

You might contact the manufacturer if it's that new.

What Mike said. The Savage bolt comes apart easily. Make sure it's clean on the inside and put some dry lube like graphite on any place you think needs lubed.

great thanks for the tips, does anyone have a diagram of the bolt on how it is put together?

I assume I start at the back of the bolt with with an allen wench?

thanks again

Yup just unscrew the allen screw and it will all come apart. Just lay it out in a row as their are several pieces to keep them in order when you reassemble. Brake cleaner will take all the crud off the insides.

You can download a manual from Savage on thier website. Those old Savages are well built guns. You might want to pull it from the action and do the same to the trigger group then spray on a little dry lube or graphite (it comes in a small tube for lubing door locks at the hardware store) into the trigger group when it's dry.
