View Full Version : Same melting pot for hard cast and pure lead?

I cast round balls and Maxiballs® from my Lee pot. These are unalloyed lead.
I want to begin casting bullets for my Super Redhawk .480 Ruger, hard cast, perhaps Lyman #2, Linotype, other. The alloy is for a different query. But these will be alloyed lead.
I want to use the same melting pot for both types of bullet casting. How do I clean the pot to maintain consistency of material I'm casting at the time? Just adding to what's in the pot and casting would be a recipe for who-knows-what.

I've been doing exactly that for lots of years. Just get what ever is in the pot hot, flux it good and drain it out thru the spout in ingot molds. I then take a wire brush and clean the pot out and put in the new lead. Flux it normally and go to casting.
I cast linotype for the handguns, wheel weights and pure lead for both the muzzle loaders and fishing weights. That's three different types lead and I've not had any problems.

Do you have the Lee pot with a bottom spout or the one without one? In the latter case, I would take a steel chain ring (hardware store item) and melt old metal and put the ring in and let it freeze around it. AFter it has cooled and shrunk, you should be able to lift the old metal out in one piece using the ring. Once removed, follow Bob's approach of brushing the inside (do that outside and wear a filter mask) with a stainless brush. At that point a few remaining traces or drops of lead or alloy won't be enough contaminate to affect the bullet casting properties of whatever you put in next.
The Lee pots are also not outrageously expensive. You could own two, if it really worries you?

I have a Lee production pot #90022. I think it has been superceded.
