Me and some buddies are planning on making a January trip to the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area... it's way up in Northeastern MN) and I was thinking of doing some bobcat calling. I was reccomended on another forum that I should hunt sloughs or timber and I know places that will suit that well. I have some experience calling coyotes and was told that a high-pitched rabbit call would work.
Any tips?

About any call will work. I've found that bobcats usually come in slower than coyotes. When I know bobcats are in the area and call for them I'll call up to 45 minutes. I usually won't call unless I've seen a cat or cat tracks as most of my coyote calling sets only go for 15 or 20 minutes.
Get a feather and put it on a string and tie it up 50 or 75 feet from your calling spot and let it twist in the wind. It'll take the attention off of where your at.
I usually call two to five minutes and then hold up for five. I repeat this til it's time to leave. For coyotes if nothing shows in 15 to 20 minutes then their out of earshot or have been educated and won't come in to a call. (educated means someone has called them in and shot at them before).
If it's heavy cover country then a shotgun with a tight choke and #4 or 5 shot works quite well out to 40-50 yards. If there are two of you a rifle and shotgun works extremely well.

If you decide to do the cat calling in the BWCA, you've gotta be careful you don't pull the trigger on a Canada lynx. They are more common in the "Holy Waters" area, and considered by the bunny-huggers to have a seat at the right hand of God. Make sure you know the difference between our two kitties: ear tufts, tail, and feet; and have a good time over there.

A squealer works. Called up a cat one, when I expected a coyote. Fortunately I saw him when he was still, oh, 10 or 15 feet away, and getting ready to pounce on me.
We both learned a valuable lesson that day!!!
