two quick questions from a new guy. first, anyone ever heard of an Alpine Mfg company that reworked Mauser 98 actions. I have one of these in 30-06 and cant find any info on it. This gun needs a new stock and I dont know what to buy. Second, I have a Remington 742 in 30-06 which wont extract. what are the simple things I should do to try and fix it?

Thanks

Don't know about the mauser, sorry.

On the 742, I assume that you mean it won't cycle. If it does cycle but not eject the cartridge, there is no simple fix. If it does not cycle, first remove the clip and see if you can pull back the bolt easily by hand. If not an easy pull, take off the forend piece and look at the blowback mechanism. Check the spring, guide rod and action bar for rust or other problems. Check the blowback hole to see if it is clogged. If there is no problem there, try to fire one round without the clip in. If it fires that way, you have a loose clip. Replace it.

Esowers,

Welcome to the forum. Rules are to join in, be polite and not post anything our younger readers should not be exposed to.

Regarding the Mauser, the name Alpine is applied both to rifle models by companies of other names (see image below) as well as there being the Austrian company, Unique Alpine. In any event, if what you have is a true Mauser 98, then stocks of all kinds are available. .30-06 conversions for 98's once flooded the surplus market in the form of the Columbian army surplus Mausers. These were all conversions in .30-06 and have a small notch in the top inside center of the receiver to allow the long .30-06 to be fed from a stripper clip without bumping into it. I stocked one of these actions with a Bell and Carlson Carbelite stock from Midway (http://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/search?search_keywords=Mauser+Stock&category_selector=all_products&Click+to+Begin+Search.x=0&Click+to+Begin+Search.y=0&Click+to+Begin+Search=Search_Button) and found it pretty satisfactory for my purpose, which, at the time, was to make an ersatz scout rifle. The Advanced Technology stock (scroll down until you get to it on this page (http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/advanced_technology_rifle_stocks.htm)) looks like it would allow a scout scope configuration if that interests you? Google on stock makers to find wood and other synthetics.

I also own an Alpine Supreme in 30-06, I think you will find it the same as a Parker Hale. Thats what I've been inforemed.

I have a 742 also that had the same problem. It is the extractor that has failed. I took mine to a repair shop and it cost me $45 for a new one to be installed.
