I have a brand new Marlin 1894 Lever Action Cowboy .45 Colt. I was down at the gun range yesterday afternoon and I fired 100 rounds. After about the 30th round I went to fire, but the extractor failed to grab and eject the spent cartridge brass from the previous round. I levered the rifle to chamber the next round, but the brass from the previous spent cartridge would not eject it just stayed put at the base of the barrel. I cleared it, and continued firing but the same thing happened about 11 more times at random before I finished shooting. I have a set of A-Zoom snap caps for the rifle that eject flawlessly every time, before and after I went to shoot my Marlin for the first time. I was using Magtech .45 colt cowboy loads and have not used any different brands of ammo yet. I am wondering if it is the Magtech ammo causing the problem, I have one more 50 round box of the Magtech ammo and I plan to purchase another 50 round box of a different kind of .45 colt ammo and shoot again on Monday. I want to see if the problem re-occurs before I give the Marlin folks a call. In the meantime any thoughts or suggestions here? Thanks

If I understand correctly; when you work the lever, the spent case is being pulled back out of the chamber, it is just not ejecting out the side?

Make sure the extractor is pivoting freely (it does have a strong spring) and isn't binding up. Look in the action as you open the bolt, the ejector should pop up when the bolt slides back past it. It could be hanging up on some crud or a burr.

Lastly make sure you when you are shooting that you work the lever all the way, don't "short stroke" it, in other words.

I would try another brand of ammo first. Compare the rims on the Magtech to anything else.

The extractor could be a little short, or just not working freely, if it won't pull from the chamber. Take the bolt out and inspect it carefully - see how much grip it has on a case, compared to the snap caps.

Haven't had this issue with a Marlin so these are just general thoughts. Good luck.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

I think it might be a "new gun" issue? If so, a good clean and lube is likely to fix it. An old toothbrush(or someone elses toothbrush) is a good tool for some of this.

Thanks for the input guys. I will try a different kind of ammo. Tomorrow is National Ammo day. I will go pick up 100 rounds and see how it goes. I will post back. Thanks again.
