Whats really making my ears wiggle about now is a double rifle in .458 Lott, with some 540 grain hard cast bullets, of LBT or Beartooth style. Then maybe a wild hog hunt. . . . . Anyone got any loading data for the Lott?

Sorry DJ, I have a 458 Lott in the Ruger RSM, but have yet to start loading for it. The 500 grainer factory loads rattle my teeth plenty. A 540 almost makes my ears bleed just thinking about it. :p I can imagine the Beartooth bullets would do you a good job though.
I'd sure like to have a double as well. Not sure a 458 Lott is going to be a very common chambering. Took a walk through the Elmer Keith "museum" at Cabelas in Boise a week or so ago and he sure had a few nice doubles.

O man. . . . I've wanted to go thru that museum. I have all his books and have a friend that knew him very well. He did do all the things he talks about.
I at one time used my old Ruger #1 chambered for .460 Weatherby for shooting jack rabbits, so not worried about teeth rattling, but yes, I would have to have it custom made to my spec's.
I have another friend that goes to Africa several times a year and really likes the Lott. But also with the hard cast, I would reduce velocity to around 1,800 fps. I'm wanting to find some loading info for that velocity with a cast. Guess I need to start from scratch. I have time however, as I would need to cash in some retirement dollars to have one built anyway. Thanks for the feed back.

DJ,
One of the doubles in the Elmer Keith museum is a 577 NE. A very hefty looking rifle, as you'd want it to be, but I was just surprised by the size of it. Apparently, he had planned to take it on his next trip to Africa, but never made it back to use it. I'd like to think he shot a muley or elk on the Salmon with it!
Not sure if you could get the 1800 fps from a 45-70 with the 540 grain bullet?? Sure could with a 458 Win mag though, so if wanting the Lott, are you just wanting the versatility to use conventional bullets and conventional loadings in this if you chose? If so, I completely understand. But if wanting to use cast bullets at moderate velocity, seems one of the "traditional" chamberings in a rimmed 450 or 470 might be the better path?

Thanks for the input. I'm not interested in tradition, just wanting the versatility of the Lott. The old .460 I had was a little too much, and the .458 not quite enough for my tastes with a big bore double. I do know that 1,800 with the .45-70 is out of the question. Another reason for the Lott. Hope I get to go see Keiths museum in the near future. Hmm, might be a great trip next summer on the Harley!

Well a belted round isnt a good idea in a double , can have probs with extraction ..
I have the CZ550 Lott ( Euro stock , weighs 8.7# ) , it does real good with casts but I get better results with WinMag cases than Lott cases ..
54 grains of H335 with a Win Mag cases gets 1900~ with the Lee 450 RN cast WW's ..
I had lots of data for heavier casts , lost in a fire ..
