just shopping for load info with IMR 4831.
I bought the rifle(Model 98 Mauser Action) used from an older retired friend but I have yet to shoot this rifle, my deer hunting here is close range so no real need to shoot this rifle but couldn't resist buying the rifle when he retired from hunting.
His loads called for 98 grains of 4831, CCI mag primer using 236 grain RN Remington Core loks that were discontinued years ago but still have plenty. He never shot the Rifle much either, usually just at Elk.
any info would be appreciated... Thank you, Eric

Welcome to the forum.
Since it's a wildcat, I'd strongly recommend checking the information against programs like Load from a disk and QuickLoad. There may be others.
You'll still have to work up, but those should give you a safe starting point. I'd use a chronograph as you do, as well.
Good luck.....

Thanks for the welcome and the information.
I think that 98 grains of 4831 for the load I mentioned is about 20 grains high myself,I have about a box of cartridges with the rifle when I bought it and i'll take my bullet hammer and pull one apart and weigh the powder for certain.
I always work up load slowly, thats just good common sense.
I think my retired friend was having memory problems sooner than we learned of. I still see him but he's in a home now and his memory is still fairly good.

One little sanity check you can make, is to compare suggested loads to what has been published for both the .300 win mag and 338 win mag with the same bullet weights (or as close as possible).
In theory you should be somewhere in between.
I hope that makes sense....

waubjeeg,
Which 338 mag case is this based on (what does the headstamp say?). I'd have to think the 338 Rem Ultra Mag case with the numbers you give. No way are you going to stuff 98 grains of 4831 in a 338 WM case. Or, are you going with 8mm RM case, with 338 bullet??

sanity check has been completed...
I finally stopped procrastinating and got the bullet hammer out and scale, the 8mm-.338WM 4831 load weighs in at 68 grains.
This load could be loaded hotter yet as the load is not compacted but I'd have to shoot this first of course.
I can't say when I'll actually shoot this rifle but I just had to buy it.
I use the .308 Rem 722 to hunt deer with here and yes the 722 was a .300 Savage when it was new 1952, not sure who had it converted. Eric

I am not sure if this will or not, but I have a 338/8mm (40 degree) that I recently traded for and the two loads that are scribbled down on paper are a 215 grain Sierra with 91 grains of RL-19, and a 250 grain Sierra with 86 grains of RL-19. I was hoping someone might have other loads to try also.

For years I have had a Pacific sizer die in 8mm/338. I have no use for it and the first person that wants it can sure have it for the shipping.

Check out P.O. Ackley's books as they have some data. Again this cartridge has a bit more case capacity than the 325 WSM. You should be able to use the 325 WSM data as a start load. It appears that the 8mmx338Win has more case capacity over the WSM by 4-5% est.
