Hi all,

I bought a Mossberg 500A, 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun from WallyWorld last night. It has a 28 inch, ported barrel that came with three Accu-Chokes; Modified, Full and Improved.

I know this shoots bird shot, but is there any chance that it can shoot slugs also? Or does it need a slug barrel for that? If yes, which choke would I use?

It will shoot standard (not sabot) slugs fine, use a improved or modified choke. If you have never fired a slug keep that gun hard against your shoulder or you will be in for a big unpleasent surprise.

Will this cause any damage, over time, to the barrel? Any more so than basic bird shot?

I have fired many Foster type rifled slugs in my 500 Mossberg using improved cylinder choke. No problems. Sabot slugs will not work well. I purchased a 18 " Bbl with no choke and adjustable iron sights from an aftermarket company called Hastings. Cheep (less than 100 dollars new at the time). This works great with the rifled slugs! I really do not use it much past 50 yards but 100 yards can see good groups

So, with better sights, is this shotgun, shooting slugs, something that I could use for deer? Sorry to ask so many questions, a bit new to the possibility of bigger game.

Sure you could. Check out midway or Brownell's for sights. My Mossberg came with fire sights on it. I don't shoot slugs, it's a turkey gun.

I had a Western field (500 Mossberg) with the 30 " full choke it shot foster type slugs at 2" groups at 50 yds! Later put a 28" barrel with adjustable choke tubes on it and it still did 2' at 50 yds with the Improved cylinder choke! Go figure.

You would probably never shoot enough slugs to put any wear on your shotgun. Try the cheap Brennek KO slugs if you can find them, they shoot out of 500s quite well.

I have a Mossberg 500C (20 gauge, 28", Fixed Modified choke) and it shoots the foster slugs into 3" at 100 yards. I need to get some better sights if I want to use it for hunting though.
